Trollkin

Trollkin are a strong, hardy, and tradition-minded people renowned for their tenacity and resilience. Indeed, they are one of the easiest of the progeny races to get along with and according to most culled are a stark improvement over their cousins the trolls.   The most telling trait of the trollkin is the story of their choice during the War of Souls. They chose to remain loyal to their god (the Emanation called Vaprak) and thus to the primordials, not because they agreed with the actions of their progenitors, but because to turn against them would dishonor the memories and spirits of their fallen ancestors. Their secondary reason was equally as understandable, if a bit insane - after the Shattering occured, they believed that the armies of the primordials would be the underdogs of the war and thus sticking with them would afford the trollkin kriels more opportunities for great heroics and legendary feats. They were not wrong.

Personality

Trollkin are some of the most hard headed people you will ever meet – more so than dwarves. Once set in their ways it is almost impossible to change their minds and their opinions become as unmoving as mountains. It is from their pride that they take this hardheadedness - too proud to admit they were wrong in their beliefs and to move forward.   They insist that one must be proud of who they are and never show weakness, for nobody wants to hear a story about the hero who gallantly rushed into danger and promptly changed their mind. They believe that to do so would be disrespectful to their own memory and to their families for which they rely on.   They don’t simply wanted to be remembered, but believe that their very soul is carried forward from generation to generation on the words of others. A soul that can live on for thousands of years as long as there are still those who tell the story. It is a belief fueled by their pride.   Nevertheless, a Trollkin at your side means a steadfastly loyal ally who isn’t afraid to break a few arms when the need arises.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They share several physical characteristics with their bestial Troll cousins, including hairless, thick skin, rocky growths that protrude from their flesh, and prehensile head spines in place of hair. Their bodies are tall and bulky, larger than a dragonborn, but rarely taller than eight feet. They have thick muscles, often putting them over 300 lbs, but generally have large hunches and long arms.   Trollkin are able to change the color of their skin depending on what climate they reside in and what diet they ingest. More arid regions turn a trollkin's skin grey or brown, temperate regions often have green or blue trollkin, and arctic regions tend to turn a trollkin's skin a very pale blue. Trollkin skin also tends to pale as they grow older. Almost always, a trollkin with sorcerous potential is born as an albino.

Genetics and Reproduction

Trolls reproduce through a unique process called kryndring - wherein a male and female troll will both sever a piece of themselves (usually something small like a finger or toe) and then press the severed appendages together. A ceremony is performed during this 'birthing' that invokes the spirits of the kriel's ancestors - and after a few hours the pieces will have not only joined, but regenerated into a new trollkin.   These tiny, newborn trollkin are referred to as pygmies and can be as small as a mouse when first 'birthed'.   Trollkin believe that this process takes a part of their soul and so only engage in reproduction rarely.

Growth Rate & Stages

Trollkin mature rapidly, as a result of their regenerative powers. They reach full size within three years and are considered adults within eight years. Their lifespans are difficult to estimate due to their healing abilities, but it is generally thought that after 600 years or so a trollkin will lose the ability to regenerate and will soon after die of old age.

Trollkin always wear distinctive quitari patterns that denote their connection to kith and kriel.   Most Trollkin wear tattoos to show tribal loyalty or to associate themselves with their ancestors' spirits. Great Trollkin warriors take this practice a step further and brand their flesh with acid or fire to show mastery over fear. The acid or fire burns represent overcoming the curse of regeneration and that they are no longer afraid of what was once considered their greatest weakness.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Persisting outside the laws of most kingdoms, trollkin are organized into large tribal societies called kriels which are comprised of multiple families called kiths.   They tend to be divided between wilderness kriels, who are often at odds with nearby civilizations, and those who have integrated into either progeny or culled kingdoms. Few trollkin are comfortable on both sides of this divide, and most must eventually choose between them.   When they do choose a life within a kingdom, trollkin are valued for their seemingly inexaustible stamina as well as their variety of crafts - particularly the art of armed conflict.

Darkvision
You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Keen Smell
You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Trollblood
You concentrate regenerative power in your blood to swiftly recover from wounds. As a bonus action, you can expend one hit die to regain hit points as if you finished a short rest. The number of hit dice you can expend increases by one when you reach 6th level (2 hit dice), 12th level (3 hit dice), and 18th level (4 hit dice). You must complete a short or long rest before using this ability again. In addition, you have advantage on death saving throws and can slowly regenerate severed body parts. You can grow back severed fingers and toes after 24 hours; severed hands and feet after 3 days; and severed limbs after 1 week. If a severed body part is present and whole, you can reattach it during a short rest as long as you spend at least one Hit Die to regain hit points.

It Burns!
Your regenerative powers can be halted by certain types of elemental damage, throwing you into a rage. If you take acid or fire damage, you lose access to the Trollblood ability until you finish a short or long rest. When you take acid or fire damage, as a reaction, you can enter a rage until the end of your next turn to gain advantage and extra damage on all attacks made against the creature that dealt the damage. The extra damage is equal to one half your proficiency modifier, rounded up.
