Qyr

Nothing is perfect. Qyr not only believe this fact, they rejoice in it. Every imperfection is a chance for improvement, and progress is an endless march toward a state of perfection that can never be reached. This viewpoint leads qyr to pursue their work with delighted enthusiasm, never deterred by setbacks and excited by every opportunity for improvement.

Personality

Despite being talkative, qyr keep their personal lives private, and they tend to engage more with ideas than with people. They form close friendships based on mutual interests or compelling disagreements, and their interactions dwell on their thoughts about those issues rather than their feelings about them.   To members of other races, qyr often seem cold, even emotionless. That assessment isn't fair—they feel emotion every bit as intensely as other folk do, but they are skilled at not displaying it. Cool rationality guides their actions, they make and follow careful plans, and they are patient enough to do nothing when the ideal outcome relies on such inaction.   That being said, they tend towards pride and haughtiness, viewing other races as backwards mental gnats fit for little more than servants and themselves as the intellectual power behind whatever nation or organization they belong to. Despite their unpleasant demeanor, the qyr are renowned throughout Edras for their command of the mystic arts and highly valued as advisers and court wizards.   Orreries, astrolabes, observatories, meteorological charts, topographical models - all of these things are like furniture to a qyr. They are compulsive measurers and recorders of information of all kinds, but tend to focus on visual data. The qyr are driven to understand everything around them, and are thus in a constant, intense observational state. This can give other species the unnerving impression that they're being monitored and examined, rather than talked to.   Their curious intellects and rational minds incline qyr toward membership in organizations that will put their intelligence to use in crafting and improving things, whether those things are laws, procedures, or magical sciences.   Qyr believe that the path toward the impossible goal of perfection is paved with bricks of education, careful deliberation, and controlled experimentation. Some qyr direct their energy toward perfecting themselves, whether by means of biothaumaturgy or through extensive study, and others concentrate on perfecting society through the careful drafting and application of laws.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Qyr are tall and slender, standing almost a head taller than other Soulborn, on average, but weighing about the same. Their hairless skin comes in a range of shades of blue, while their eyes tend to be darker shades of blue or violet. They lack external ears and their noses are broad and flat.

Growth Rate & Stages

Qyr mature slower than most Soulborn do, reaching maturity around age 40. Their life span is typically 350 years, with some living to the age of 500.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Qyr are given names at birth, but usually choose new names for themselves as part of their transition into adulthood. They do not use family names. When introducing themselves to others, qyr use their clade as a kind of surname.   Male Names: Aglar, Bellin, Dallid, Firellan, Kavin, Koplony, Lomar, Mathvan, Modar, Nebun, Nhillosh, Nitt, Otrovac, Ovlan, Pelener, Rill, Trivaz, Uldin, Yolov, Zataz   Female Names: Azi, Barvisa, Brazia, Direll, Fainn, Griya, Hallia, Katrille, Kovel, Lilla, Mirela, Morai, Nedress, Ossya, Pierenn, Roya, Sestri, Triel, Uzana, Yaraghiya, Zlovol   Clade Examples: Hull (Armorers, Shipwrights, etc.), Fin (Navigators, Riders, Vehicular Development, etc.), Crypsis (Intelligence, Espionage, Surveillance, etc.), Gyre (Tinkering, Magic, etc.)

Beauty Ideals

Qyr beauty ideals are not a set thing as their philosophy of perfection, and thus their standards of beauty, change and adapt. Many female qyr like to wear intricate wigs or headpieces and some have many for different occasions, this is not to attract the opposite gender, however, but more to show prestige and position.

Gender Ideals

There are no major distinctions between the genders of qyr, as both are equal in intelligence and learning capability.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

While many believe them to be a unified front, in private, qyr organize themselves according to clades. Clades are supra-familial entities centered around common interests. Membership of clade is entirely voluntary and anyone can leave at any time. Several acclaimed qyr inventors are part of multiple clades.   Qyr live in an atheistic culture, in the sense that they choose not to worship deities, Emanations, or Primordials, though those exposed to the Codex Sophia find it irresistibly intriguing. They possess little to no concept of the arts; almost all time is given over to the pursuit of knowledge and through it, power.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Qyr generally have no quarry with civilized races, when they regard them at all, but savage races (like goblins, lizardfolk, orcs, etc.) tend to irritate them to no end. They do have a high fondness for gnomes, however, as they are highly intelligent and share their interest in magic; they also find the chaotic and haphazard lifestyles of the diminutive Soulborn infinitely charming.
