Orinoh, the Peach Blossom Province

Orinoh, the Peach Blossom Province, is an isolated island kingdom in the far west of the Sea of Night. Horrible sea creatures infest its waters, typhoons crash against its shores, and to the southeast lies the abode of dragons - so they have remained cut off from the rest of Edras for thousands of years, developing their own distinct culture. This has led the Orinese people to hold a deep-seated fear and mistrust towards outsiders. They believe that contact with the outside world could disrupt the delicate balance they have maintained with nature and the deities, and therefore, they prefer to remain cut off from the rest of Edras.   The island of Orinoh is characterized by its diverse terrain, ranging from towering mountains to lush valleys, dense forests to pristine beaches. The island itself is a temperate paradise, each season distinct and beautiful in its own way. In the winter, the mountains at the center of Orinoh are covered with deep snows. In the spring, peach blossoms blanket the island. Orinoh summers are magical affairs, filled with festivals and celebrations. The fall in Orinoh is a masterpiece of burnt oranges and deep browns, while the harvests bring in delicious fruits and vegetables from the fields.   One of the most prominent geographical features of Orinoh is its mountain range known as the Naragata no Sanmyaku. These majestic mountains are located in the heart of the island and their always snow-capped peaks can be seen from even the furthest shores of the kingdom. The peaks are known to be treacherous, with steep slopes and rugged terrain that make them difficult to traverse. However, they are also home to rare and exotic flora and fauna, making them a subject of fascination for adventurers and researchers.   In contrast to the Naragata no Sanmyaku, the southern part of Orinoh is characterized by fertile valleys and plains that are suitable for agriculture. The region is known for its extensive peach orchards, which are the pride of the kingdom and a major export for the Orinese people. The peach blossoms in spring are a breathtaking sight, blanketing the island in a sea of pink and white petals, and attracting tourists from every corner of the island.   Orinoh also boasts dense forests that cover significant parts of the island, particularly in the eastern and western regions. These forests are home to rare and endangered species, many of which are magical in nature. The Orinese people have a deep reverence for nature and the forests are considered sacred, with strict laws and regulations in place to protect them from overexploitation. The coastline of Orinoh is dotted with numerous beaches and coves, known for their pristine beauty and crystal-clear waters. The beaches are often secluded and offer tranquil retreats for those seeking solitude or relaxation.   The glacial northern peninsula of Orinoh (and its archipelago) is a desolate and treacherous land, constantly buffeted by icy winds and raging blizzards. It is a place of stunning natural beauty, with towering snow-covered mountains, vast glaciers, and frozen lakes that glitter like diamonds in the pale winter sun. However, few dare to venture into this harsh and unforgiving terrain, as it is home to some of the most dangerous creatures in all of Orinoh, such as giant ice spiders and yuki-onna. Despite its inhospitable nature, there are still some brave and hardy souls who call the frozen northern peninsula home, such as the rugged and fiercely independent White Wolves, settlers from the Falling Hammer and Grinning Lantern clans who have lived on the peninsula for generations and have adapted to the harsh environment. They are known for their impressive hunting skills, their mastery of ice magic, and their deep respect for the spirits of the land - some reckon that the White Wolves are only a single great act from being granted minor clan status by the Emperor.   In addition to its natural landscapes, Orinoh is also known for its unique rock formations. The island is scattered with mysterious jade megaliths that have become landmarks and points of intrigue for the Orinese people. These formations are often associated with legends and myths, adding to the island's rich cultural heritage.   The imperial kingdom of Orinoh is ruled by an imperial family that supposedly has an unbroken lineage all the way back to the Shining Ones. It was this family that first turned the people of Orinoh back towards the faith of the deities. Throughout the centuries, their rule has been mostly fair, but incredibly strict and without compromise. Justice and law are very important to the Orinese, so while there is very little crime on the island, punishments are swift and harsh. In order to keep its line strong, the imperial family makes a policy of marrying all natural-born sorcerers and humans to imperial spouses. This has made the imperial line of Orinoh unique in all of Edras - it has an exponentially higher rate of both sorcerers and humans born within its ranks than the average populace.   The people of Orinoh are broken up into a caste-based society, where each person knows their place from the time of their birth. The Ich-oh are those who belong to the imperial family, the Ni-oh are warriors and leaders, the San-oh are courtesans and courtiers, the Shi-oh are the holy men and women, the Go-oh are the merchants and scholars, the Roku-oh are the farmers and fishermen, and lastly the Nana-oh are the unclean. Warriors are raised to fight, farmers are raised to farm - never shall the two cross. Castes are taken very seriously and never questioned in Orinoh, save for by the insane or the foolhardy. Crossing caste lines in Orinoh is either the cause for great celebration or swift execution - and rarely anything in between.   Descended from a group of travelers from Shixra who were lost on their way to settle the Ru'ora Archipelago thousands of years ago, the Orinese people are deeply connected to their land and its resources. They have developed sustainable agricultural practices and fishing techniques that allow them to thrive on their isolated island. They value inner peace, tranquility, and a connection with nature, and strive to maintain harmony in their lives. They are also known for their craftsmanship, creating exquisite works of smithing, art, pottery, and textiles that are highly sought after in other parts of the world. Religion also plays a significant role in the lives of the Orinese people. They adhere to the faith of the deities and have a strong belief in the divine nature of their imperial family.

Led by the Kami, Emperor Hannya, they are renowned for their military prowess, their deep knowledge of history, and their unyielding loyalty to the Emperor. The Emperor's word is law, and the Golden Claw Clan sees themselves as the enforcers of that law. They take great pride in their role amongst the clans and their strict adherence to the Emperor's commands is legendary. They believe that honor is the foundation of a just society and strive to uphold it in all aspects of their lives, adhering to a strict code of conduct that emphasizes integrity, honesty, and valor. They are known for their skill in martial arts and military strategy, and their standing army is considered one of the largest and most formidable in Orinoh. They are also known for their strict discipline and unwavering loyalty to their comrades, as they believe that camaraderie and trust are essential in battle and in life. In addition to their military prowess, the Golden Claw Clan is also renowned for their scholarly pursuits, particularly in the field of history - their knowledge of the kingdom's past is unparalleled. They meticulously study ancient texts, scrolls, and relics to gain insights into the history, culture, and traditions of Orinoh. This deep understanding of their kingdom's history allows them to make informed decisions and provide counsel to the Emperor on matters of state. They are highly respected and revered in Orinoh, and their members are seen as paragons of honor, integrity, and loyalty to the kingdom and its divine ruler. Above all else, the Golden Claw Clan lives, breathes, and dies for the Emperor of Heaven.
  • The Falling Hammer Clan - The Falling Hammer Clan, led by the Kami, Lord Yama, are known for their role as the defenders of the kingdom against the monstrous spawn of the Primordials. They are a proud, aggressive, and violent clan that leverages their strong military skill to win conflicts and ensure the Empire's borders hold strong. However, their constant warfare against inhuman foes has hardened them into tremendously powerful and brutally practical warriors, often considered crude and barbaric by the other clans. They are primarily tasked by the Emperor with defending the kingdom's borders against the monstrous creatures that seek to invade and ravage the land from beyond the Sea of Night. Over the centuries of doing this duty, they have developed formidable military prowess; their army is known to be the strongest in all of Orinoh and is capable of defeating any two of the other clans in battle. The members of the Falling Hammer Clan are known for their unflinching devotion to the preservation of Orinoh at all costs, prioritizing the safety and security of the kingdom above all else - even their own honor. Their constant exposure to violence and conflict has shaped their mindset, and they tend to prioritize practicality and effectiveness over civility and manners. They are known to be blunt, straightforward, and direct in their communication and actions, often lacking in social graces or diplomatic finesse.
  • The Broken Wave Clan - The Broken Wave Clan, led by the Kami, Lord Kaminari, are known for their mastery of trade and sailing. They primarily inhabit the coasts and islands of Orinoh and control the main fleet of the kingdom, dwarfing the fleets of all the other clans combined. Often dismissed as pirates and thieves, the Broken Wave Clan has a lucrative trade empire due to their strategic position on the islands of Orinoh. One notable aspect of the Broken Wave Clan is that they do not use family names; instead, they carry the names of the ship or port on which they serve, reflecting their close association with the sea and maritime life. They are known for their keenness to talk and trade, and are often welcoming to guests, sharing seafood, foreign wine, and tales of adventure. However, they are also quick to defend themselves with their butterfly swords, should the need arise. The Broken Wave Clan is not particularly known for their sense of honor, and many of their members have foul mouths and are influenced by the foreign ideas of gaijin. They are known for maintaining close friendships with the Emperor, which allows them to get away with more than they should, including smuggling goods to and from the mainland of Edras. Despite their reputation, the Broken Wave Clan plays a crucial role in Orinoh's economy due to their control of lucrative trade routes. They are skilled negotiators, savvy merchants, and expert sailors, allowing them to amass considerable wealth and influence.
  • The Dreaming Grove Clan - The Dreaming Grove Clan, led by the Kami, Lord Mori, are known for their pursuit of individual enlightenment and their deep connection with the mystical realm of the Kami. The Dreaming Grove Clan is known for their enigmatic nature, with their beliefs and practices often shrouded in mystery. They embrace paradoxes and puzzles, which some dismiss as triviality masquerading as depth, however, the wise understand that the Dreaming Grove Clan's pursuits and their connection with the Kami is a profound and devout expression of their faith and loyalty to the empire. The Dreaming Grove Clan's secluded lifestyle sets them apart from the mainstream culture of Orinoh, as they prioritize introspection, contemplation, and communion with the Kami. This also reflects their emphasis on personal growth and self-discovery; they encourage their members to explore their own path towards enlightenment, which may involve meditation, introspection, and communion with the Kami in the sacred groves of their forests. Despite their secluded lifestyle, the Dreaming Grove Clan remains dedicated to the empire and the Emperor, seeing their strange ways as a means to serve the empire in a unique and meaningful way. They believe that by connecting with the mystical realm of the Kami and gaining insight from their visions, they can contribute to the greater good of Orinoh and its people. The Dreaming Grove Clan's enigmatic and mysterious nature has earned them both admiration and skepticism from others in Orinoh. Some may dismiss them as eccentric or impractical, while others see them as wise and profound.
  • The Wicked Moons Clan - The Wicked Moons Clan, led by the Kami, Lady Tsuki, are known for their clandestine and shadowy activities. They are masters of deceit, intelligence gathering, and even darker practices, making them the hidden left hand of the Emperor. The Wicked Moons Clan is willing to sacrifice their honor to carry out tasks that no other Clan would dare to do. The Wicked Moons Clan is rumored to train and use secret families of ninja, although such rumors are not spoken of publicly, as it may result in swift challenges from their master duelists. They are known for their skills in espionage, manipulation, and assassination, and they value loyalty and duty above all else. The samurai of the Wicked Moons Clan believe that by dirtying their own hands, they can prevent others from having to do so, as they carry out the tasks that are necessary for the greater good of the empire, no matter how dark or morally ambiguous. One of the distinctive traits of the Wicked Moons Clan is their highly superstitious nature. They hold beliefs and practices that may be considered strange or unconventional by other clans. For example, they may sprinkle salt on a new garment for good luck or avoid stepping backward through a threshold to ward off ill fortune. These superstitions are deeply ingrained in their culture and are followed with great reverence. The Wicked Moons Clan's mastery of deception and intelligence gathering makes them formidable opponents in the realm of politics and intrigue. They are known to be skilled manipulators, able to navigate complex webs of alliances and rivalries to further their own agenda and that of the Emperor. They are also skilled assassins, carrying out covert missions to eliminate threats to the empire or to gather crucial information for the Emperor's benefit. Despite their shadowy nature and willingness to engage in dark practices, the Wicked Moons Clan holds a sense of duty and loyalty to the Emperor above all else. They see themselves as the protectors of the empire, willing to do whatever it takes to ensure its stability and prosperity. They understand that their actions may not always be honorable in the eyes of others, but they believe that the ends justify the means when it comes to safeguarding the interests of the empire and the Emperor.

The Howling Brush Clan has a long-standing history of wielding great power in the courts of the land, and their preferential status with the Imperial line is well-known throughout history. One of the notable contributions of the clan is the establishment of the formal dueling system of iaijutsu, which was initiated by one of their first daimyos in the early days of the empire. This dueling system has become an integral part of the culture and customs of Orinoh, and the skilled duelists of the Howling Brush Clan are both respected and feared for their mastery of this art. Despite their elevated status, the Howling Brush Clan is both respected and hated by other clans. They are respected for their skills, talents, and contributions to the empire, but their privileged position has also bred envy and resentment among some. However, the Howling Brush Clan strives to maintain smooth relations with all clans, regardless of their true feelings towards them. They understand the importance of diplomacy and political maneuvering in maintaining stability and harmony in the empire. Their adherence to ancestral customs is notable and they strive to uphold the values and principles that have been passed down through generations. They take pride in their heritage and consider themselves first among the clans Orinoh, the custodians of the Emperor's Court.
  • The Grinning Lantern Clan - The Grinning Lantern Clan, led by the Kami Lady Unmei, is a Great Clan in Orinoh with a tumultuous history. In ancient times, the Grinning Lantern Clan was banished from the empire due to a forgotten sin committed by their Clan Champion against the Emperor of Heaven. They spent nearly five hundred years outside the Empire, exploring the Desolation of Namhala and other lands before triumphantly returning during the Third Howling to the Peach Blossom Province. Despite their eventual return, the Grinning Lantern Clan is still considered barbarians by most of the other Orinese clans to this day. The cultured society of the empire believes that they never truly relearned the civilized ways of their motherland, even after a thousand years. However, the other clans could not be more wrong. The Grinning Lantern Clan, influenced by their contact with gaijin cultures during their time outside the empire, has simply chosen to follow their own path, distinct from the traditional ways of their cousins. The Grinning Lantern Clan is known for their military might and their cavalry, which notably rides atop monstrous mounts from lands beyond Orinoh's borders, is rightly feared by the other clans. The people of the Grinning Lantern are fiercely independent and self-sufficient, valuing freedom and individuality. Despite their differences and sometimes strained relations with other clans, the Grinning Lantern Clan remains resilient and tenacious. They have overcome challenges and hardships in their history, and their return to the empire after being banished is considered a significant triumph. They are determined to forge their own path and prove their worth to the other clans, even if it means being misunderstood or underestimated.
  • The Ashen Whisper Clan - The Ashen Whisper Clan, led by the Kami, Lady Shinigami, are a Great Clan with a dark and mysterious reputation. Originally chosen from among the Nana-oh, the unclean and the outcasts, the Ashen Whisper Clan has risen to power despite being shunned by mainstream society. They are obsessed with death and the grave, and their practices of dark magics, rituals, and ceremonies would scandalize and terrify even the bravest of samurai. The Ashen Whisper Clan exists on the fringes of Orinese society, dwelling in the shadows and delving into occult practices that are considered taboo by many. They are tasked with protecting Orinoh from the realms of the Primordials, guarding the places where the barriers between worlds are thinnest and monsters pour forth from the hellish wastelands beyond. This responsibility has given them a unique and often misunderstood role in society. One of the defining characteristics of the Ashen Whisper Clan is their regular practice of venturing into the Ascendant Realms seeking occult resources, esoteric knowledge, and unfathomable plunder. They delve deeply into the unknown and acquire all manner of forbidden knowledge and artifacts from their adventurers in the realms beyond. This pursuit of forbidden power and knowledge sets them apart from other clans and makes them both feared and respected. They see themselves as the first line of defense against otherworldly threats, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill their duty. Legend has it that they are descended from the Scion of Night's only daughter, Melndar, and they carry her name with pride. The Crescent Owl Clan arrived on the shores of Orinoh several hundred years ago, and their presence initially sparked fear of an invasion from the Upside Down. The Emperor of Orinoh, fearing the threat of the monsters beneath Edras, had the Crescent Owl Clan captured and sentenced them all to execution. Fate, however, had another plan. The Emperor's wife had a vision from Lady Tsuki, the Kami of the Moons, which showed a great battle that could only be won with finely crafted armor and weapons made from strange metals shaped by the hands of these foreign dark elves. A meeting was called with the Matriarch of the captured Dark Elves, and a deal was struck. The House of the Crescent Owl was formed with the mission to teach the clans of Orinoh the new crafting techniques they possessed, as well as to protect the empire from the horrors of Har'oloth, the Upside Down. Although the Crescent Owl Clan has never been fully trusted by the other clans of Orinoh and are often seen as outsiders, they have proven their loyalty to Orinoh several times over. They have become renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, producing some of the finest weapons, armor, and other crafts in the Empire. In addition to their skill in craftsmanship, the Crescent Owl Clan also boasts exceptional archers and duelists among their ranks, quickly adapting to the Orinese practice of iaijutsu. Religion

The Orinese follow an ancient form of the Brisingelion that personifies the deities as parts of the natural world called Kami.

The Kami

  • Emperor Hannya (Oros) - The leader and progenitor of the Kami. He is treated more like an ephemeral force of existence than an anthropomorphized individual. He oversees Creation, Knowledge, Time, and Law. He is associated with the Hawk and the Eagle.
  • Lord Yama (Enmensur) - The Kami that is embodied in the great mountains and cliffs of Orinoh. He oversees Earth, Honor, Strength, and Destruction. He is associated with Aurochs, Oxen, and Bulls, as well as all animals in general.
  • Lady Shinigami (Nimriel) - The Kami that is embodied in the tombs and graves of Orinoh’s dead. She oversees Blood, Death, War, and Nightmares. She is associated with the Wolf and the Dog.
  • Lady Unmei (Lesu) - The Kami that is embodied by all the stars in Orinoh’s night sky. She oversees Light, Fortune, Travel, and Trickery. She is associated with the Fox and the Firefly.
  • Lady Hi (Sielach) - The Kami that is embodied in the sun that shines in the sky above Orinoh. She oversees Battle, Fire, Celebration, and Art. She is associated with the Lion and the Horse.
  • Lady Tsuki (Oolene) - The Kami that is embodied in the three moons that hang over Orinoh. She oversees Air, Night, Passion, and Secrets. She is associated with the Nightingale and the Owl.
  • Lord Mori (Arhah) - The Kami that is embodied in the forests and wilds of Orinoh. He oversees Life, Nature, Dreams, and Peace. He is associated with the Elk and the Deer.
  • Lord Kaminari (Manem) - The Kami that is embodied in the seas, rivers, and storms of Orinoh. He oversees Water, Storms, Vengeance, and Chaos. He is associated with the Shark and the Octopus.

Foreign Relations

The Orinese people, due to their isolated location and the circumstances of their split with the people who would settle Namhala, have developed a deep sense of mistrust and fear towards outsiders. They adhere to strict isolationist policies, avoiding contact with the outside world and maintaining a xenophobic attitude towards foreigners. They have little to no interaction with other cultures or civilizations, and their way of life has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. They have developed their own distinct customs, traditions, and practices that are passed down through generations, and they hold a strong sense of pride in their unique identity as Orinese.   They view outsiders with suspicion and often perceive them as potential threats to their way of life. They believe that contact with outsiders could disrupt the delicate balance they have maintained with nature and the deities, and therefore, they prefer to keep their kingdom secluded from the outside world. Foreigners are generally not allowed to enter Orinoh without explicit permission from the imperial family, and even then, they are subjected to strict scrutiny and monitoring during their stay.   It's important to note that extreme xenophobia and isolationism can have negative implications, such as limiting opportunities for cultural exchange, economic growth, and personal development. However, in the context of the Orinese culture and their isolated island kingdom, their xenophobic tendencies may be seen as a survival strategy to protect their unique way of life and maintain the delicate balance they believe exists between nature, the deities, and their society.

Laws

  • Divine Magic reigns supreme in Orinoh, though Natural Magic is a close second.
  • All other magic is illegal, punishable by immediate execution.

  • Sorcerers are viewed as oni and bakemono, save for those born with Divine Magic, who are believed to be children of the deities and are adopted into the Imperial Family.
