Personal history

The Rutand was conceived by the goblin warlock Drak Rutand and a hobgoblin assassin. Weeks after conception, it was born from its mother's corpse after she was slain in an ambush. The Rutand, while still an undeveloped fetus, was sustained by its father's magic and survived for quite some time. This came to a stop after Drak Rutand cast a grand ritual that allowed for his patron, Cthulhu, as well as a number of other great old ones and elder evil to enter the world. The potency of the ritual cost Drak his life and he was interred into a great tomb by the cultists of his master. The Rutand, now dead because the life-sustaining magic had now been dispelled, was preserved in a jar of fluid and interred alongside its father. Millenia later, the Rutand was stolen from its resting place and passed around through various arcane, eldritch, and occult circles. Eventually, it found its way into the hands of a tiny goblin merchant who walked the planes trading exotic goods. It was in the Plane of Air that this goblin managed to pawn the goblin fetus in a jar off to a party of adventurers known as Varahosst's Host. Simon Mockwell, the wizard of the party, took possession of the fetus and cast the animate dead spell on it to see the effects it would have. Strangely, immediately after animation, the fetus broke free of the magical control and seemed to be alive rather than undead. 
Unnatural and eldritch events follow the Rutand wherever it goes. While with Simon Mockwell and Varahosst's Host, the Rutand gave ominous and prophetic visions to both Azrael Moonrest and Simon. These visions were of an end of an era, wherein various beings emerged from the depths of the ocean and invaded the surface world. The Rutand also was exceptionally swift and agile when removed from its jar. After learning this, however, Simon and Azrael were attacked by the creature after it attempted to escape from their cabin on the Crimson Crusade. Seeing that it was frenzied and was only going to end its hostilities when either they were dead and it was out of the cabin or it was dead, Simon stabbed it and punted it off the edge of the boat and into the depths of the ocean. Since then, it has not been spotted, though Simon and Azrael continued to have visions of it and the elder evils it portends.
