The Chromatic Vale

Demographics

The Chromatic Vale's population consists almost entirely of the scaled followers of the chromatic dragons, along with many chromatic dragons themselves. The most numerous creatures in the city are the kobolds, who serve primarily as cheap labour and fulfill other undesirable roles in society. Dragonborn and Lizardfolk are the next most numerous race in the Chromatic Vale. Humans, while uncommon, are also found in the Chromatic Vale. The rarest race in the Chromatic Vale is that of the Half-Dragon. Half-Dragons generally hold positions of power that the dragons have abdicated to them since the dragons believe that their time would be best spent elsewhere. Dragons are numerous in the Chromatic Vale, with estimates counting anywhere from 500 to 1000 chromatic dragons of varying ages residing in and around the city.

Government

The Chromatic Vale is historically ruled over by a council of five members, one from each of the different types of chromatic dragon, called the Chromatic Council. Since the arrival of Tiamat, however, the council has stepped aside to allow Tiamat to take control of the city and its people.

Defences

The city has a smaller army that is bolstered by conscripts during times of war. In addition, the elite Order of the Dragon Knights serves as a powerful standing army that is used to deter invaders. The city's population also boasts many dragons, which serve as fierce defenses if the city was to be attacked. In times of war, the Chromatic Council may call upon the dragon population to serve as warriors if the situation proves desperate enough. When this happens, the Dragon Knights are paired to a dragon that will serve as their mount for the duration of the conflict. This is called occurrence is called 'flying the dragon banner.'  The city has a large stone wall built around it for increased defensibility.

History

The city used to be one of the major cities of the Dalelands, but it was conquered by Rocktooth Bearhide, a Kobold Barbarian in the year 1023. Rocktooth was a fervent worshipper of Tiamat and used this city as a base of operations for his ever-expanding quest to create a great hoard of treasure for Tiamat's glory. Eventually, Rocktooth managed to persuade a handful of dragons, along with their minions, to take up residence in the city. Over the years, the city grew to be prosperous and attracted more dragons and their servants. In the year 1223, Tiamat's true form was summoned to the material plane by a fanatical cult known as the Cult of the Dragon. Upon Tiamat's return to the realm, she flew to the Chromatic Vale and was given total control of the city and its resources.
