Personal history
Graziliad Rothfrox is an illithilich or, put more plainly, a mindflayer who is a lich. Shunned by his colony long ago for dabbling in the arcane arts, Graziliad was an outcast. After being exiled, he wandered the lands below and honed his mastery over the forces of life and death, becoming a powerful necromancer. As most necromancers eventually do, Graziliad decided to become a lich in order to live eternally and gain more power. And so, after a powerful ritual was completed and a work of alchemical genius imbibed, Graziliad finished his apotheosis into lichdom. It is told in legend that after gaining this power, Graziliad cooly teleported back to his old colony before slaying every last mindflayer and raising them as his undead minions. Not even the elder brain was spared this fate according to the tales told.
However, this murderous and evil Graziliad is long gone. After a particularly nasty fall, Graziliad had his memories erased and jumbled. He knew he was a powerful magic user but did not know his past or where his items were. Thus, he sought out help. He offered adventurers the job in return for magical boons and they accepted. For centuries Graziliad has fallen into a cycle of having his items, losing his items, and then getting adventurers to find them in return for boons. This cycle is what earned him the titles of the Forgetful Flayer and the Careless Wizard. Graziliad's personality also underwent changes after his accident. He became more kindhearted and welcoming; a strange occurrence in the Lands Below. Seasoned adventurers who know of Graziliad welcome the sight of him for it means they will be in good company.
