Arcanaven

Government

Arcanaven is run by a senate formed by nine individuals. Eight high magi, each the most skilled and powerful in their respective school of study, as well as the leader of the senate, the archmage. The archmage is elected from among the high magi and the position is occupied for life. Upon the death of the ruling archmage, a new archmage is elected. When the time comes for a new archmage to be elected, each of the high magi vote on who among the eight they believe is most fit to take the position. In the event of a tie, a competition will take place between all of the tied parties. Common competitions include the creation of a magical item which is then reviewed by prominent artificers, magical duels, or a battle of wits and knowledge wherein the involved parties must demonstrate their understanding of all things magic.   The current senate is made up of Archmage Grodvarth Ulthar, High Abjurer Hilda Brunhammer, High Conjuror Kurath Olvindur, High Diviner Melkor Moonshadow, High Enchanter Therdular Veruthar, High Evoker Sarindlar Syndarash, High Illusionist Greebil Grundi, High Necromancer Silis Garthiel, and High Transmutor Tirith Nuglor.

Defences

Arcanaven is a well defended area. Its first defense is that it is located upon an island. The city itself has large stone walls and is full of magic users. If an army decided to assault Arcanaven, they would have to content with nearly every citizen as they are all magic users who fled here to escape persecution. Beyond that, the mages of Arcanaven have various constructs such as golems and animated armor that serve as guards.

Assets

Arcanaven is home to the largest wealth of knowledge on the continent of Vukeron and, likely, all of Edradus with countless tomes of knowledge both esoteric and mundane. Hundreds, if not thousands, of topics have been researched by the arcanists that reside in Arcanaven and, it is said, if you search hard enough, you can likely find some obscure research on any conceivable topic. Arcanaven is also home to the largest vault of magical items, stored for safekeeping, preservation, and research.

Guilds and Factions

Arcanaven is home to a variety of artificer guilds, mage guilds, demon and devil cults led by warlocks, the Anti-Inquisitor Organization, and various other groups of a magical nature.

History

Arcanaven is the name of both the piece of land that broke off of Vukeron in the year 1111, and of the stronghold-city that was built upon it. Arcanaven is a safe space for arcane magic users and a select few divine magic users. Generally, only clerics and paladins who worship gods of magic are allowed into the city. When Relithos began to fund its inquisition against arcane magic due to the destruction caused by an arcane ritual gone wrong, many magic users feared for their own safety. Those of a more industrious nature, like artificers and conjuration wizards, sailed to the island and began to build a safe haven for the arcane. Over the years, many artificers, wizards, warlocks, and other arcanists have flocked to the safety provided by Arcanaven. Not even the inquisition has been brave enough to attack the island.
