The Hoisted Shroud

Charitable Sailors?

Their ships set sail at the port in Amantia and for the coastal settlements of Valorden, the Hoisted Shroud is simultaneously a source of constant irritation but also a fairly powerful organization that brings riches and profits to their home port. In the past, they have made considerable investments in the port of Amantia after it has been destroyed by the temper of the sea. Despite their reputation as pirates they do not meddle with trade and commerce and have at times been ready to spare a navigator or two to help bring others to port.

Bravers of the Storm?

Little is known to outsiders as to why the Hoisted Shroud relentlessly sails the seas between Valorden and the Empire of Echora other than that their main purpose is to plot a route through the incessant and impassable storm that rages all around the island of Supritia. The island and its storm are shrouded in mystery and no living soul knows what could be unearthed if the storm could be bypassed and foot set on the isle. While in Valorden it is commonly regarded as foolish to even try getting near such a natural force and a suicidal mission to try and pass it, some believe the Hoisted Shroud might be able to get their fleet across one day. Since their forefathers made their home on the coasts around Amantia they have perfected their ships and sailing techniques to one day reach Supritia, and be it only with one surviving crew member.

Ruthless pirates?

In the Empire of Echora, the perception of the Hoisted Shroud is more that of a looting and pillaging pirate fleet. Which, from their perspective, is a logical conclusion. The Empire and the Hoisted Shroud have been engaged in constant naval skirmishes over the years. In the eyes of Echora, a natural phenomenon of such magnitude as the storm of Supritia must have a purpose of protecting something great and magical. As leaders in all fields of study - be it magical or worldly - the Empire has set its eyes on discovering the ancient secrets of the island.
With an ever-looming storm around them, the Hoisted Shroud has always seen the ships of the Empire as a secondary concern, even if the Emperor were to send the entire Armada after them. However, the ships of the Empire provide a good opportunity to acquire all kinds of resources without having to pester merchant vessels, and so indeed the rumours of piracy might be entirely true.

Protectors of the Isle?

Their unrelenting pushback against the fleet of Echora is not only for the joy of looting and fighting but the Hoisted Shroud sees itself as the protectors of Supritia- even if they are currently not able to land on the isle - and see it as their highest purpose to keep it from being touched by any forces other than themselves. It is known that their ancestors originally lived on the island as disciples of Diantha, a figure who has ascended from the realm of the mortals to take over several domains the gods refused to watch over. Members of the Hoisted Shroud remain adamant, that while their cult is dedicated to Diantha, she has never been a divine being, and their devotion is to whatever magical mysteries lay on Supritia. As proof of Diantha's status between Divinity and Mortality, they fly fractures of the shroud from her deathbed as their ship's flags, earning them their name. Allegedly, it was Diantha who has left the isle in the care of their fathers before having been called upon by the gods. As a result, the Hoisted Shroud keeps sailing the sea and holding invaders at bay in the hopes of one day reaching their home to receive a new purpose from the mysteries found on Supritia.
