Splay Bird
The splay bird is a beautiful and dangerous creature. Standing approximately five feet tall, with a long ostrich-like neck and a razor-sharp beak, the splay bird is quite domineering. Attached to the base of its neck, the splay bird has a thick layer of brightly colored feathers that extend vertically when the bird is attempting to show dominance or mate. Behind this thick row of feathers, the Splay Bird has rows of shorter, thicker feathers that range in color similar to a peacock's feather. Altogether, the Splay Bird's extension of it's feathers help make it look larger to predators and prey alike.
Splay Birds are extremely fast and nimble, navigating on long muscular legs. The ends of their four-toed claws are capped in razor sharp, curved talons, which allow the animal to cling to surfaces, maintain grip on objects, and shred meat into more edible portions. The Splay Bird is omnivorous, and often feeds on small animals or berries as available. However, they do not shrink from prey up to their own size, including humans and elves. While rare, a Splay Bird who feels threatened or who is starving will attack without a second thought. Splay Birds, while flightless, can cover large swaths of territory quickly to hunt. However, they typically have a single next that they return to, and rarely venture far from this nest. They are extremely territorial, and if they feel their space has been encroached upon, they will pursue the intruder until they flee or are killed. Typically, you will find Splay birds in clutches of no more than four, with one male (significantly larger, and more colorful than the females) and multiple females.
