Agwrath Species in Ebilar | World Anvil

Agwrath (Ag-wrath)

Travelers passing through the mountainous regions of the Winter Lands must be careful when exploring the woods. What at first appears to be a mound of dirt, logs, and branches may really be an Agwrath. These creatures sleep for large swathes of the day, curled in on themselves in a tight ball. This allows the menagerie of hair, and branch-like spines on their back, to act as a natural camouflage with the winter landscape. The Agwrath typically enters a deep hibernating state when asleep, and can often be avoided if one knows what to look for. For those unfamiliar with the presence of Agwraths (typically newcomers to the Winter Lands), the Agrwath is a dangerous foe, who can be stirred by loud noises. Once woken, the Agwrath may not immediately attack, instead, it may choose to remain camouflaged until it has determined the best time and course of attack. Once it begins its attack, an Agwrath is a brutal animal, unleashing a torrent of blows to anyone unfortunate enough to get in its way. If sufficiently injured, the Agwrath will enter a rage state, and increase its strength exponentially in short bursts. In its normal state, the Agwrath attacks using a mixture of magical and non-magical attacks, including a strong frost-based breath weapon.

Basic Information

Anatomy

What appears first as a large pile of logs, branches, and grass, cleverly disguises a hidden Agwrath. These hulking figures stand upright at approximately 9 feet on two thick legs that resemble frost-covered tree trunks, which extend from what would typically be considered its shoulders. Two smaller arms hang mid-way down the creature's body, with their bases near the creature's chest. While the creature's torso is vaguely humanoid, it ends in a short bony tail that appears like the end of a human spine. The creature's back is adorned in thick strands of white and blonde hair which resemble dead grass, and haphazard protrusions which resemble branches, extend away from the creature's spine. An Agwrath's face is hideously terrifying, like a combination between a dire wolf and a lizard. It's eyes appear absent, but an icy blue glow appears to emanate from within the creature's core, out through its eyes and mouth. The skin itself, if studied closely, is covered in a fine grain of white water-repellent hair and is as thick as hardened leather.
