Korth Edicts

The Korth Edicts or Edicts of Korth are an agreement reached by the assembled Dragonmarked houses and King Galifar ir'Wynarn I in the city of Korth as he was nearing the unification of the Kingdom of Galifar. These edicts previously governed, and arguably still govern, the behavior of the dragonmarked houses, and the various roles, duties, and independence afforded to them within the former Five Nations of Khorvaire. The Korth Edicts established the framework to both limit the houses while also providing the economic foundation for much of the Five Nations as a whole.

The Korth Edicts, established a thousand years ago, prohibited dragonmarked houses from owning land, limited the size of their enclaves and military forces, and required rents to be paid to the crown for the land they used. House Deneith was an exception, allowed to assemble mercenary forces. Additionally, aristocrats of Galifar could not marry members of dragonmarked houses unless one forfeited their rights and heritage. The Edicts bind the dragonmarked houses to nominal political neutrality. Additionally, the Korth Edicts prevent a member of a dragonmarked house from holding rank in a national military, though they can still forfeit their rights and become an orphan to the house for any of these positions.

While the Treaty of Thronehold invoked the Korth Edicts to shut down House Cannith's Creation Forges, many houses argue the edicts applied only to Galifar's monarchy, not the rulers of the Five Nations, challenging the ability to enforce them amid the houses' rising power.

Various dragonmarked houses have stablished enclaves in Stormreach as it lies beyond the reach of the Korth Edicts. Houses Deneith, Kundarak, and Lyrandar are especially interested in circumventing the edicts there.
