House Grimm

The following is an excerpt from famed raconteur and reveler Martus Makfleye d'Phiarlan's seminal work Onward to the Past: My Adventures in Eberron.
The population of Aerenal is made up of many different elven lines, each of which is supposedly descended from one of the tribes that followed the prophet Aeren from Xen'drik. (We elves are far from perfect, but fastidiously tracing one's lineage back 40,000 years feels pretentious and annoyingly anal even by our standards.) These familial lines represent many different families all bound together by common history and are led by one noble family, which is a pretty good deal if you happen to be nobility.   House Grimm is the noble family that oversees civil governance in the Aerenal city of Kathuran, where Tok the Brownie and I spent a month one week. They are a proud and storied House: Twelve Deathless have elevated from House Grimm and scores more have become spirit idols - which, I understand, is considered a good thing despite sounding quite awful.   Fun fact: Although one must be nobility to be raised as deathless, membership in a noble house is not strictly hereditary. Aereni "nobles" do not typically even breed within the House; instead, they breed with other members of the line, keeping the noble blood spread throughout the community (how positively noble of them!). Any elf can become a noble by achieving greatness in life (or by sleeping with a noble who is currently "slumming it"). Thus, to be Aereni, as any Aereni will be quick to tell you, is to constantly pursue perfection no matter how lowly the task. And the moment the head horse-dung scooper is elevated to House Grimm for her perfect shoveling technique, I'll return the rings I stole while I was there.
The current matriarch of the House is Fortuna Grimm, Tyding's paternal grandmother.
