Pure Flame

The Pure Flame is an extremist sect of the Church of the Silver Flame that rose in the aftermath of the Silver Crusade. Many Aundairians suffered through decades of terror at the hands of the lycanthropes, and they embraced the Flame as the weapon of their liberation. They have a distorted view of the principles of the Church, however. The core principle of the Silver Flame is to defend the innocent. Those who follow the Pure Flame, however, see it as a tool to punish the wicked. They see no room for compassion. They accept the idea that the overlords drive people to do evil, but focus on burning the evil out of people, rather than bringing them round with compassion. Purists are intolerant, bigoted, and violent, rejecting the compassionate principles of the faith and denying that all are equal in the light of the Flame.   The Pure Flame is defined by this harsh violence, and an uncompromising sense of justice. Followers believe that there must be no compromise with the wicked, and they reject the premise of a hierarchy of evil; no evil deed must go unpunished. Most Purists are exceptionally loyal to the Voice in the Flame and believe the Keeper to be a divine being. At the same time, many of them also distrust the theocracy of Thrane, and whenever the Keeper makes a proclamation that challenges their beliefs, they attribute it to the corrupt cardinals putting words in her mouth. There is even a movement within Thaliost urging Archbishop Dariznu to rally their forces and seize Flamekeep to liberate the Keeper, though they lack the resources to do so.   The Council of Cardinals has taken no action to attempt to suppress or challenge the extreme beliefs of the Pure Flame, and even appointed Archbishop Dariznu as the governor of Thaliost. This was in part because the Pure Flame primarily grew in prevalence during the Last War, and the cardinals of Thrane couldn't exactly enforce their beliefs on the faithful of Aundair. The appointment of Archbishop Dariznu was an effort to ensure that the followers of the Pure Flame would accept the authority of Flamekeep.   Despite the Church taking no action against the Pure Flame, Keeper Daran is deeply troubled by their beliefs and is considering how to address the problem.
