Flamekeep

Flamekeep could fairly be said to be the heart of Thrane. Almost half of the population of the country reside within the city, or within the immediate region surrounding it. The city is the religious and political center of the nation, and has been since 299 YK, when Tira Miron sacrified herself to rebind the overlord Bel Shalor, creating the pillar of silver fire. Flamekeep was built around that pillar of fire, and eventually the city grew around it.   Flamekeep is situated in the western cliffs of Scions Sound. Most of the city is built on top of a multi-tiered pedestal of rock, surrounded by a wide channel large enough to allow ships to move between Scions Sound and the city's harbour, which is located on the inside curve of the channel. On a clear day, you could stand on the highest parapets of the Cathedral of the Flame and just about make out the distant island of Thronehold to the east.   The Keeper of the Flame, Jaela Daran, ostensibly rules from here. In practice, the Council of Cardinals handles the day-to-day running of the nation, and the Keeper only intervenes if the Voice of the Flame tells her to. High Cardinal Krozen  has taken on most of the secular administration of the nation, and largely treats Thrane as his personal kingdom.

Cathedral of the Silver Flame

Atop the highest tier of the city sits the Cathedral of the Silver Flame, visible from anywhere in the city. The Cathedral sports alabaster walls and flying buttresses filled with stained glass windows depicting historical and religious scenes.   Inside, the walls and floor are black marble inlaid with silver patterns. The nave of the Cathedral can hold thousands of people at once, pews spread out among the marble pillars.   Deep within the Cathedral, beyond two enormous doors, sits the Chamber of the Flame. This room is the resting place where the holy light of the Silver Flame burns, and where the Keeper of the Flame comes to commune with the Voice of the Flame.   Below ground, the cathedral has a network of cells where the priesthood live, and pray. These lower levels also contain the offices of the Council of Cardinals, a garrison of the Knights Templar, and the personal apartments of the Keeper of the Flame.   Anyone lucky enough to gain access to the halls might stumble upon Jaela, as she paces them often, murmuring quietly to herself. Wherever Jaela goes, so too does her ferocious guardian, Skaravojen.   A grey stone walkway connects the Cathedral to the tall spires of Thalingard.

Thalingard

Thrane's reigning monarchs have always lived in the fortress of Thalingard, clinging to the west side of the city's central plinth, it's spires and balconies offering a stunning view of the city below it.   Custom in Thrane dictates that the royal palace be named after the monarch of Thrane, but Thrane has not had a true monarch since Thalin, and thus the palace retains his name. The spires of Thalingard reach higher than any other structure in the city, including the Cathedral of the Flame.   The halls of Thalingard feel strangely empty, and neglected, despite being lived in. It serves as the primary residence of Thrane's royal regent, Diani ir'Wynarn, and a detachment of warforged guards. As the monarchy is no longer relevant in Thrane, Thalingard is as much a symbol as the regent.
