Thrane

Thrane is one of the original Five Nations that formed the Kingdom of Galifar before The Last War and is the only active theocracy on Khorvaire. Unlike the other nations which largely worship the Sovereign Host religion, Thrane's state religion is the The Church of the Silver Flame.

Government

The royal family and secular authority of the crown has been replaced in Thrane by a theocracy in league with the Church of the Silver Flame. The Keeper of the Flame, currently eleven-year-old Jaela Daran, serves as both its spiritual and political ruler. The Council of Cardinals aids the Keeper in overseeing the functions of government and church. Both secular and religious authorities follow a reporting structure atop which sit the Cardinals, who in turn report to the Keeper of the Flame. Archbishops serve as governors and mayors throughout the realm, while bishops and arch priests run individual cathedrals and churches within Thrane and abroad.

Industry & Trade

Thrane has attempted to develop a closed economy since the start of the Last War relying only on the labor of its own people with limited success. They continue to make use of the services of the dragonmarked houses, and some amount of trade occurs between this nation and its neighbors. Thrane exports wool and textiles, fruits, livestock, and fine crafts. Perhaps the most prominent export of Thrane is the missionaries of the Silver Flame. The followers of the Flame tenaciously promote their faith throughout the Five Nations and beyond. Most preach a tolerant version of the faith, but some zealous missionaries see little difference between true evil and those religions that don’t venerate the Silver Flame.

History

The nation of Thrane's name originates from its first governor-prince Thrane ir Wyrnan, in a formal proclamation in 32 YK. However, the nation itself was one of the original 5 human nations during the settlement of Khorvaire until it was conquered by Galifar I. After Galifar's conquest, Thrane was governed by relatives of the king of Galifar until the Last War. In 299 YK, Bel Shalor escaped his prison in the Tambor Hills and invaded Thrane with a horde of fiends. This incursion was defeated only after a paladin named Tira Miron sacrificed herself to reseal the overload inside the Silver Flame. Tira's sacrifice inspired the creation of the Church of the Silver Flame, which would become the dominant faith in Thrane by 400 YK.   The Last War When King Jarot died in 894 YK, Thalin ir'Wyrnan was the governor of Thrane and a devout follower of the Silver Flame. Seeing the chaos following Jarot's death, Thalin broke with tradition and declared Thrane independent with himself as its King, believing himself to have divine right to rule, helping to spark the Last War. After Thalin's death in 914 YK, Thrane rejected his son Prince Daslin as too weak for the throne. Desperate for strong leadership, the people turned to the church to guide them through this horrific war and became the first theocracy in the Five Nations.   Thrane fought zealously despite being surrounded on all sides by enemies during the Last War. By the end of the war Thrane was able to secure lands from Aundair and Breland, but at the cost of countless lives of their citizens.

Geography

Thrane is located in central Khorvaire, sharing its western border with Aundair and its southwest one with Breland. It also shares a small land border with The Mournland in the south-east though is largely separated by Scions Sound. The Scions Sound also separates Thrane for Karrnath to its east.
