The Spears

Career

Qualifications

The Spears are members of the Finders of Fortune guild and can be hired to take care of aggressive creatures and for mercenary work. To stay alive, they should possess at least general knowledge about the creatures they have to kill, including their favorite habitats, what kind of tracks they leave, their strengths, and their weaknesses. As they often spent multiple days tracking down their mark, they need to know where they can find drinkable water, which plants are edible, and which might give you a rash or poison you. A general idea of how to use a Healer's Kit can make the difference between living and dying.

Career Progression

A person vying to be a Spear first has to prove themselves to a Spear holding the Rank of Master. After having proven themselves, they will start as a Novice and can work their way up from there. Before they can get a higher rank, they need to complete a set amount of missions corresponding to their current rank; the higher the rank, the more missions are required. Once a Spear has completed the required amount of missions, they have the option to take on a mission of the next higher difficulty under the observation of a Master, to prove they are able to take on missions of that level.

Payment & Reimbursement

The higher the difficulty of a mission and the higher the risk involved, the more a Spear gets paid upon completion. With missions that require a Spear to dispatch creatures, they have to bring proof of completion to the guild to receive their pay. For more common creatures, the guild accepts ears, fangs, and claws. For rarer and special creatures the guild also accepts items such as scales or a shard of a Lich's destroyed phylactery.   The items get appraised by the guild and, together with a testimony made in a Zone of Truth, serve as proof of completion. Unless the item presented as proof is also required for contract completion, the Spear gets to keep the item in question. They also get to keep any treasures and valuables they may find, unless stated otherwise.
