Varsdeth (Voices of Doom)
A mental disorder characterized by delusions, auditory hallucinations, and disorganized speech and behavior, Varsdeth strikes the young and old orc alike. This is one of the most feared illnesses in all of the Shards because of the finality of its prognosis. Not one orc has ever contracted this illness and functioned normally in society. At most they have two, maybe three years before they are either put away, or put out of their misery.
Fear and Hatred
Even though the orc shaman's have documented that this is not contagious, the fear and hatred generated by this illness is almost fanatical. Orcs have been physically attacked while trying to remain in society for as long as they can. There has even been documented cases of stoning's, which went out with the dark times.Transmission & Vectors
Thought to be genetic, this illness usually strikes those that have had parents that have had the same illness. In fact centuries ago it was common practice to exterminate the entire family line, until that proved ineffective.
Causes
The causes of Varsdeth are not understood at all by orc shamans, though it is thought to be passed down genetically.
Symptoms
The symptoms of Varsdeth may vary depending on the individual orc but usually include:
- Delusions
- Auditory Hallucinations
- Disordered thinking
Treatment
Shaman's have tried herbal remedies, brain burns, and even water therapy, to no avail. Oft times the poor orc must be locked away for his own safety in the asylums, or in worse case scenario's, executed. Surgery is the current method of trying to cure these poor souls, to no avail as yet. One shaman in the nation of Toth has tried to get them in a trained battle group for suicide missions, but unsuccessfully.

The Asylums
The orcs have come a long way since those beginning years, building an empire of slavery and trade, yet the one building they hated to build is their crowning achievement in helping those with this illness. The asylums. There are one on each island, and they are kept locked up tighter than most slave towers. Here Shaman's attempt to work on patients and figure out what they can do for those afflicted with this illness. They have tried everything from surgery to homeopathic remedies, to no avail; yet they persist. Someday they will find a way to help those with this illness merge back into society, but for now they keep studying it.
