The Smith in the Sky
Mahth is the deity of language and creation, particularly associated with
runewords and blacksmithing. His followers tend to be craftsmen and artisans, and he is particularly revered among the
Dwarves. Mahth is represented by an anvil.
Followers of Mahth are called his
masons, and his holy places are
lodges. Membership in lodges typically requires one to be an artisan of some sort, and they often serve the role of informal cooperatives whose members can rely on each other to perfect their crafts. Often times, lodges will have communal tools and workshops for their masons to make use of.
Mahth has no holy text, though he is credited with the formulation of the
Seraphic script and
runewords. His brothers are
Thear and
Rieloch. Mahth is said to be a close companion to
Narra, who provides him the resources he needs for his crafts, as well as
Nenzus, who conveyed him the knowledge to bring force to the runewords. He is a rival of
Nes, who stole his secrets for her
runeblades.
The Great Binder
Today, Mahth's symbolism as a deity of language has largely disappeared, as runewords have become archaic beyond the halls of the Dwarves. Instead, his domain is more associated with enchantment - in other words, he is more associated with the power that runewords once held rather than their literal meaning. He is thus generally not considered to be a linguistic god, but a mystical one.
