Earthworm mutants

After the nuclear boom that happened in 2030, mutants with earthworm mutagen migrated deep underground to look for shelter. Although the idea was initially accepted, there were many challenges that arrived soon after the migration.

Background

Problems with early migration

in 2030 there were not a lot of studies done on the actual gens changes that occurred after most of the civilization either died OR merged with animals. The human form was way more important then the mutants initially have thought. Apart from consciousness, creative thinking and overall really high IQ, early humans that were merged with animals like fish, worms etc. also needed exposure to oxygen which proved to be a huge problem in migration. Early mutants were also ignorant to their situation, many opted to capitalize or brutalize/dominate weaker species (late-stage capitalism style)

Global food shortage

* move to its own article * After the nuclear war finished food was a scarcity to say the least so many mutants have figured out that they would be able to kill and eat other mutants that were previously lower in the food chain. This period was later called the "dark nuclear age" (2030 - 2040) before scientists (in their mutant form) made the collective effort to do research based on the ongoing situation. They proved that eating vegetables and technologically recreated meat (expensive procedure) was more filling than eating other mutants. It was also proved that eating other mutants lead to a condition that was named crazy eyes which resulted in a slow, painful death (if cannibalism was done repetitively). Soon after it, it became illegal to eat other mutants with strict no-tolerating policy that resulted in the death penalty if the crime could be proven (via blood tests). Cannibalism still happens till this day but it's looked as a last-effort resource and used only in life-death situations.

Mole reign

Between 2030-2040 moles often trapped and ate earthworms that they were able to catch underground. Many of them died due to crazy eyes. Reputation of moles suffered to the point where there were public executions of mole mutants who didn't commit cannibalism just because there was so much hatred towards this mutant species. Nonetheless it was too late, too many innocent earthworms died to look past the mole crimes.

After math

Mole mutants and earthworm mutants have had really bad relations up until 2100, but after 3 generations have passed not a lot of young moles or earthworms mutants remember the past. There's still tension between older generations, especially between families of innocent mole mutants and families of earthworm mutants who suffered lose of their loved ones. Population wise mole mutants lost a lot more mutants (due to crazy eyes' deaths) then earthworm mutants because earthworms mutants can reproduce several times in a year with 2-20 offspring per mating.
