Looters Survival Guide: Foods

You have been traveling on an overgrown asphalt path. A rusty road marker sign leans into your view on the left side of the ancient roadway. Mile 4859. Your datacube tells you a small, but stable human settlement is not far from here. A solar-powered blinking light catches your eye.
You also notice a small keypad and USB port on the other side of the device. As you press the blinking button a small hologram of a bearded man pops up about 8 inches into the air. The recording is garbled at first, but eventually, you make out what he says.

Stay Alive. Foraging Rules for the Area

My name is Raphael. Our outpost is not far from here if you seek refuge. If you seek to loot us you will find we are quite capable of defending ourselves and we will know you are coming. If you wish to survive, please press the grey button and look into the device. As you peer into the square device a small camera focuses on you and a :click: is heard from inside. The box whirs for a minute and the hologram changes to a HUD display. The veterans voice read off the words in an instructional manner.
Thanks, friend. The data cube is for survivors like you. We have been in the area for some time and we are making a life out here slowly but surely. If you want to avoid contact with us and pass through you will find the journey to be at least a week or two on foot. We have compiled a survival guide for those interested. Click the encryption code if you wish to download a copy to your device.     The device sputters a bit and hums for about a minute. The voice continues reading from the script. If you find something more to add, please write it down and drop it nearby, our scouts know what to do with it.   You decide to download the document for future reference.
Maple Syrup is a great stable form of nutrition. If you know how to harvest it from those maple trees. It can sweeten all those bland flour hardtack biscuits and whatever else you need. No need to worry about it spoiling for a long time.

Groundling Pemmican - Perhaps you just emerged victorious from a battle with a group of mutant humanoids. Adult Groundlings can feed a group of 5 for days.
Ingredients
1⁄4 pound (110 g) of dried meat
1/2 cup (75 g) of dried berries (wild blackberries are around)
1/2 cup (100 g) of rendered fat or bacon grease
1/8 teaspoon (0.7 g) of salt
Makes about 1 cup (340 g) of rat-man pemmican

  • Cook the meat in a pot of boiling water. Extract the fat and collect in a container. Leave it to dry in the oven for about 1 day.
  • Pulverize the dried berries into a powder and pulverize the meat as well then combine.
  • If you have salt add a few pinches of it in the mix
  • The rendered fat can now be added to the mix and form it into a block about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cut into pieces and wrap for future use!

A simple formula for Hardtack

Eat the Weeds Blog by Deane

Picture of an Amaranth plant
You need flour. Flour can be scavenged from Amaranth, cat tail pollen, or barnyard grass.
Grind up the seeds into a fine powder. Some critters might be in there, just place it on a flat surface so they can leave, or eat them for more protein!
Add salt (a pinch to a teaspoon)
Slowly add water to the powder and hand mix into a soft consistent ball
Flatten the ball to about 1/8 - 1/4 inch thickness. cut the dough pieces into 3x3 squares. poke holes to rlease moisture
Bake until browned. They can be eaten as is. Or added to soup as bits of crackers. Cover them up and they keep for a long time.
Hard tack breaks off stubborn plaque and calculus on teeth!
