Stay Alive. Foraging Rules for the Area

Never eat anything if you’re not 100% sure of what it is.
Be careful of where you forage (make sure you know the landscape, holes, threats, rivers, etc.)
Stick with a few items you’re familiar with rather than spending hours searching for new plant species that might be dangerous.
Memorize a few different types of edible plants common to your area (grasses are common enough plants to most areas, so if you get lost in the woods you know that grass is one plant you can count on.)

Watch out for creatures and of course, Wizards and hostile humanoids.
Let someone know where you’re going before you go out foraging.

Valuable loot

Honey - Chances if you find any jars they are crystalized and you would be mistaken to pass them over. This would be a mistake. Honey holds its nutrition and has lifespan used by the ancients. Warm that jar up and enjoy.

Dried beans and lentils can last indefinitely and canned beans can last years if stored in a cool, dry place. Do not ever leave jarred beans.

Salt is one of those universal ingredients to preserve food and a key ingredient to survival meals.

Sugar - If there is sugar, treat it like gold. It can keep and its uses are numerous. Corn Starch - If there are boxes or containers of this stuff still around, It is worth space for your personal backpack. The corn starch has multiple uses and lasts longer than you will.

Human liquor is rare, but if you do find it. You won't be disappointed. Hard liquor is what you want to take back to headquarters. It is a resource we all can use.

Kinds of vinegar - Apple Cider or White Vinegar should be among the top things you take back to your camp if you find it. The uses are numerous and it is shelf-ready.

Some far east cultures have buildings that may have soy sauce packets, bullion cubes or containers. The salt content in these babies will keep it safe for a long time. If you find rice. Do not hesitate and snatch it. Rice keeps a long, long time. The bullion is great for soups. Because soups will make up most of your meals.

Environmental resources

Cattails are growing well in non-radiation zones and if you come across a patch, nurture them and get them to flourish. Many uses for Cattails! Food Source - the roots can be used for starch, the pollen can be harvested for flour.
If you are in arid regions look for Mesquite trees. The uses of mesquite are numerous, but the flour is the easiest to harvest.

Survival Recipes

To keep yourself going you better be able to have clean water, a source of protein and a product which you can store and take with you. These simple recipes can be foraged and created here in this region.

Pemmican

If you are scavenging and you come across a meat source larger than a squirrel or rat, you would be wise to not waste it and make it last as long as you can. If you are lucky to come across a cervid, buffalo or another ruminant you can make this. In general, Pemmican requires meat to be ground up, the tallow from boiling it, salt to preserve it and some wild fruit. This three-part pemmican is a staple in our ranks. Hard Tack

These are basic rations for us. Make sure it is a part of your settlement so you can focus on improving your survival chances. It is flour, water, and salt.

Maple Syrup is a great stable form of nutrition. If you know how to harvest it from those maple trees. It can sweeten all those bland flour hardtack biscuits and whatever else you need. No need to worry about it spoiling for a long time.

Groundling Pemmican - Perhaps you just emerged victorious from a battle with a group of mutant humanoids. Adult Groundlings can feed a group of 5 for days.
Ingredients
1⁄4 pound (110 g) of dried meat
1/2 cup (75 g) of dried berries (wild blackberries are around)
1/2 cup (100 g) of rendered fat or bacon grease
1/8 teaspoon (0.7 g) of salt
Makes about 1 cup (340 g) of rat-man pemmican

• Cook the meat in a pot of boiling water. Extract the fat and collect in a container. Leave it to dry in the oven for about 1 day.
• Pulverize the dried berries into a powder and pulverize the meat as well then combine.
• If you have salt add a few pinches of it in the mix
• The rendered fat can now be added to the mix and form it into a block about 1/4 inch thick.
• Cut into pieces and wrap for future use!

A simple formula for Hardtack

You need flour. Flour can be scavenged from Amaranth, cat tail pollen, or barnyard grass.
Grind up the seeds into a fine powder. Some critters might be in there, just place it on a flat surface so they can leave, or eat them for more protein!
Add salt (a pinch to a teaspoon)
Slowly add water to the powder and hand mix into a soft consistent ball
Flatten the ball to about 1/8 - 1/4 inch thickness. cut the dough pieces into 3x3 squares. poke holes to rlease moisture
Bake until browned. They can be eaten as is. Or added to soup as bits of crackers. Cover them up and they keep for a long time.
