Khomm Republic

Structure

The Khomm Republic has an elected president that represents the country in all diplomatic matters. A Grand Marshal is responsible for maintaining the military. Both powers are equal in the eyes of the Constitution, and are elected for a term of six years. The Royal family, while holding no political power or status in government following its deposition after Khomm's defeat in WWI, is still recognized and beloved by a sizable portion of the population.

History

The Khomm Republic has its origins in the unification of the kingdoms of the Ticondra peninsula. These various people groups were first documented in the early 5000's RB. Its inhibition has been speculated to have originated from Nomadic people groups from Central Peraquiem, referred to as Erustians. In their early history, small, weak villages and city-states dotted the land, the most prominent on the eastern coast of the peninsula. The warm, fertile growing climate made growing grapes, peaches, barley, corn, and wheat opportune. This environment led to rapid population expansion, greater than other comparable regions in Oparva, Peraquiem, and Regellico. The peninsula had various scattered city-states spread across it in its early history. Early forms of languages, based upon the Latin alphabet, came into being, with many overlapping each other, defining the Erustian culture. Despite this, unique aspects developed from the various geographically different regions. The more seafaring peoples of the southeastern regions had far larger cities with more open and intricate architecture backed by an economy based primarily on fishing and craftsmanship. This contrasted sharply with the more close knit walled communities of central and northern cities, known for their metalworkings and farming, and the nomadic northwesterners and their extensively developed fur and ranching practices. The large scale of the peninsula led to many diverse cultures and kingdoms regionally independent from each other.   One of the largest and regionally influential of these was the Kingdom of Areina, founded in the 310's ASE. The empire stretched along the eastern coasts and hills of the Ticondra peninsula, centered around the capital city of Syvlitun. Dating its founding to 152 RB, the city was located atop a plateau next to the Shawlita River, which provided both natural defenses and easy access to the Willmont Ocean, which would prove to be factors contributing to the kingdom's success. The city built its empire by bringing surrounding regions under its control. Its military expansion, aimed at protecting resources and trade, as well as to combat enemies, expanded rapidly. United by the first Chief Magistrate, Marcellus Gianluca, who seized control of local provinces by expanding his monarchical structure by consolidating the systems of local leaders, the state became an empire in 317. Prior to unification, these regions upheld political authority through a council made up of the various regions, with the Chief Magistrate installing himself as the leader of this organization. The kingdom hammered out an extensive sea-based empire. Its coastal nature of relying on fishing as an important food source and sea based trade routes to connect it to markets in Kunlinka and greater Peraquiem mandated the need for a large navy. Further demand for protection of its vessels and inland territories saw the growth and development of its naval and armed forces; Areina’s standing military grew exponentially to handle security, enlarging from 28 armies in 350 to 56 armies by the year 400. These forces found themselves under direct control of the Chief Magistrate. In 413 the kingdom came under attack by the Galinites, who initially prevailed and laid siege to Areina’s western lands. The Areinians took up arms and drove the Galinites back, led by military general Cornelius. The Areinians gradually subdued the other peoples on the Ticondra peninsula. These outermost provinces were tenuously annexed into Areina for resource purposes to fuel the growing empire, namely the acquisition of iron mines. It’s more populated inner provinces were classified as its imperial provinces. Areina became the cultural, economic, and political hub of Tricondra. Under Areinian support, literature grew steadily in the Golden Age of Latin Literature produced from Ticondra. Poets like Vestil and Caneus developed a rich literature, of both entertaining epics and historical records. This coincided with the growth of the polytheistic state religion. Which had not been uniformly common. Under Areina, support of national religion and participation was viewed as necessary for society to function. Many temples and shrines were constructed across the eastern coast’s largest cities. Areina used this to increase its control over the general population.   Areina maintained its power as the strongest entity in the Ticondra peninsula, and its military advantage through superior training and naval power was used to weaken its enemies, namely the rival state of Chargestival. In the year 625 Osterius came to power. As Chief Magistrate, Arenia further expanded its territory. The kingdom's ability to rapidly commercialize seafaring trade with neighboring empire of Akachuku and the Central Peraquien Kingdoms allowed Areina to rapidly annex much of the eastern half of the Ticondra peninsula, including the southern tip, a valuable strategic point, and exert control of the resource rich northern lands of the Kunlinka strait. The stability of the empire during this time marked the peak of prosperity of Ticondra. Compared to its poorer and smaller northern neighbors, Areina had managed to commercialize its resources and build an impressive military. The large cities were known to be much cleaner, healthier, and impressively built. Unlike the more compressed, fortified cities common in Central Peraquiem and the Lesparian peninsula, Areina’s cities were much larger, spread out over much more land. Areina also had a very sophisticated sewer system that was far ahead of its Peraquian neighbors. However this might would not not last. In the 700's, shifting cultural attitudes, mainly with the fervent introduction of Christianity, slowly eroded public support for the kingdom. Combined with a string of weak leaders, its military strength was squandered. But the most crucial difference was the Northwestern War in 900. While Areina was not a direct participant in the conflict, the elimination of its trade partners, who were either annexed or tied up in war, meant that Areina lost a major source of income. Without this income, the neglect of the military was accelerated rapidly. Its outerlands, once strongly controlled by the military, were abandoned. Sensing weakness, Chargesiival attacked crucial farmland in northeastern Ticondra.Following its defeat by the neighboring kingdom of Chargestival, Areina collapsed in 811 ASE, and the capital was razed in 817 by invading barbarians.   The next two centuries proved tumultuous for the Ticondran peninsula. The peninsula was broken into small cities, and infighting among them became the mainstay of Ticondra. The most notable included Normijia. Normijia arose from the remains of southern Areina. Normijia, using its geographic separation from competing military powers in central Peraquiem, maintained a degree of the vast sea networks of Areina, trading goods and bringing wealth from the Kunlinka strait and the central Peraquiem kingdoms, and going so far as to expanding into westward into the Suiem Inlet. With the southern port city of Stalipere acting as the seat of government, a sort of merchant republic arose. This region was much more developed in the arts and economics as opposed to its northern counterpart, Chargestival. Unlike Normijia, Chargestival was located at the opposite end of the peninsula in the northern hills of Ticondra. Chargestival was a rival kingdom that was the oldest of the three, gaining traction in the mid 500’s as a reaction to growing Areinanal power. Following the collapse of Areina, Chargestival emerged as the dominant military force of Ticondra. Using large armies, Chargestival kept a tight grip in its lands. This was in large part due to its close proximity to Peraquiem. Chargestival was in conflict with the central Peraquiem states, namely Iopluatan, which was looking to expand into Ticondra. The common threat of invasion from neighbors such as Iopuluatan meant that Chaegestival had substantial military institutions to ward off invasions. The final major kingdom of Ticondra was Khomm. Similar to the military direction of Chargestival. Khomm was naturally mountainous, making defense more easier than Chargesitval.   In the new Millenia, the three strongest kingdoms, The Khommians, Normijians, and Chargestives, emerged as the dominant forces of Ticondra. It was during this time that all three kingdoms embraced Christianity, to varying degrees. With the collapse of Areina and the abandonment of the state religion, Christianity found a much more welcoming environment to missionary work. This helped anchor the rule of the kingships, as well as the investment of a growing merchant class. The three kingdoms came to a relative peace in governing the peninsula, only rarely trading attacks amongst themselves. Warring city-states also dotted the peninsula. The three kingdoms found several wars against these powers, creating a mostly-winning streak. The largest, in 1355, pitted Khomm against Talgary. Located on the Deusxicef peninsula, Talagry was a powerful kingdom that had been expanding upon valuable mineral sites in Western Ticondra. The Brisswall War, named after the mountain range on which most battles associated with the war occurred, lasted for three years, and resulted in a Khomm victory as Khomm used its technologically superior navy to launch naval offensives against Talgary, cutting off support to its forces and ending their intrusion into Ticondra. Other threats to Ticondra were posed as early as the 1200's; Bishop states, small theocratic institutions that were based upon Crestentin beliefs, began to infiltrate the northern peninsula from central Peraquiem, mainly threatening Khomm and Chargestival. These states were very resilient to the Ticondran kingdoms, launching several wars in the 1300s and 1400s. The strongest opposition from the north however came from a unified Corsin After the Northwestern War in the mid 1400's. Forming from a need for common security and strengthened economic prosperity, Corsin sun grew to be massive in its power. The Corsin Federation began to conquer the bishop states, and put a unified pressure against the kingdoms.   Economic decline intensified during the 1300’s and 1400’s, as global trade interests shifted away from Peraquiem and toward Oparva. The most prolific change from this development was the establishment of the mercantilist colonies of Ostedia, the first of which was the short lived smithinain colony, and would be followed by colonization of the Neorin Regions, Greater Brunland, and Raediff. Ostedia’s position on The Bermion Ocean allowed for them to monopolize the trade between the two continents for nearly two centuries. Ticondra’s lack of access to North Oparva made capitalizing on the resources of Oparva impossible, and led to the complete undermining of Ticondran shipping. This also marked a decline in technology, as scientists in northern Peraquiem had a much stronger pool of resources and financial backing, easily surpassing the three kingdoms capacity for development in the 1500's. Much of the population descended into poverty during this time. Without due cause to stay, many prior kingdoms split off. Cultural attitudes during this time reflected this feeling, and a feudal system developed, where it was shrinking in other nations. This prof saw both khomm and Chargestival extended domination south upon rouge states, eventually entering treaties with Normijia defining clear borders. The leaders of Ticondra, seeing the successes of other Peraquiem nations and the threats they, both politically and economically, had begun to talk of unification, similar to what Corsin had done a few centuries ago. Soon, widespread ideas of reviving the kingdom of Areina, at least in spirit, among the population. Many factionalism groups, such as the New Alliance Movement in Khomm and the Liberation Party in Chargestival. These groups, composed mostly of students and professional workers, motivated by spirited economic nationalism and worry over national security. However these movements would never achieve widespread success on a national scale. It wasn’t until the ascension of Chancellor Aflonso Benvenuti in Normijia in 1765 that such movements found a national platform. Normijia, on paper, has the least desire for unification. Its sea networks provided ample economic opportunities, as opposed to the limited scope of the mostly agrarian economies of Khomm and Chargestival. Despite this, Benvenuti was a firm supporter of unification, and worked closely with the king of Khomm, King Sviturno. Through open diplomacy, all three nations expressed willingness to unify.   With growing public sport and the backing of many industries of the kingdoms, such an agreement was followed through on March 2, 1797, where the three kingdoms signed a unifying treaty. Khomm, being the most militaristic and politically stable power, was chosen as the official name of the nation, and its king was placed in control of the nation. However, the capital was located from Khomm's previous location to Syvlitun, the cultural heart of Ticondra. Despite the political support of unification and the economic benefits it created, much of the population remained divided in their cultural attitudes. Nomijia most of all, who resented trading an elected leader for a King. Despite a common language and religion, dialects, social norms, clothing, and art remained separate, limiting the initial success of unification.   Nevertheless, the rapid nationalization of Khomm’s industries helped modernize them. This ideology however conflicted with the capitalist revolution sweeping its neighbors, most notably Corsin. Corsin's nationalistic ambitions were brought to a head when Khomm invaded in 1814. The forces clashed along the Suromm ridge. Without either country being able to win a victory over the other, a truce was declared. Khomm began to rapidly militarize during this time, and sent its navy to carve territory, mostly from pressure of a ravenous population seeking to outpace the power of Corsin, but to gain access to rich oil fields. The nation of Jumbia, located across the Suiem inlet adjacent to Khomm’s western border, proved to be an excellent target. With rich resources, advantages location and close proximity, The khomm armed forces invaded in 1845. During this time, much of the population tended to very extravagant and excessive art and architecture, characterized with silver, steel buildings with large ornate details. While this style was not uncommon throughout Peraquiem, Khomm was the most extreme in its execution, fueled by a sense of economic competition with its northern neighbor and a feeling of needing to outdo them. Khomm continued to be a major power going into the twentieth century, producing great works of art and theater. Its economy expanded, like other nations during this time, with the industrial revolution, as the ability to gain natural resources, easy access to transportation and power, and large workforce led to Khomm becoming an economic power. Its factories produced processed foods, machine products, and home appliances. Along with its economic capacity, Khomm’s military power also increased, a large army and newly established Air Force put it on the forefront of military capabilities. Utilizing modern technologies, Khomm was thrust into the forefront of global importance. Both of these put it at odds with its neighbors, most notably Corsin and Talgary.

Demography and Population

Khomm boasts a population of 225 Million people. Ethnically diverse, Khomm is populated by several different groups, namely the Khommians, Norminians, and Chargestives. Tracing their origins to Areinians, these groups share much in common in terms of religious and cultural practices, as represented in a mostly common religious practices and unifom use of English being the most common language. As Chargestives are the largest ethnic group, many people live in the eastern coasts of the country in large cities. Most of the rest of the population lives in provinces of the northwest of Khomm. The birth rate, as the nation is so large, has slowed to around 2.3 people per family, while the life expectancy is 76.6 years. This statistic is much lower than its other Peraquiem neighbors. Khomm has a high literacy rate, measured at 97%.

Territories

Much of the land has been inhabited and controlled by the three kingdoms and their peoples for the last 1000 years. The country covers the majority of the Ticondra peninsula. The peninsula has long, low coastlines with extensive beaches in the east The western coastlines feature, tall black cliffs, with much stronger currents and waves. Its inner lands are home to tall plateaus and hills, sparse with trees. These lands are excellent for farming, but become very marshy and wet in the spring. The Climate of the peninsula is cool, dry winters with very warm, mildly wet summers. Around 5% of the land is made up of tall jagged mountains, which are located in the northwestern part of the nation that connects into ranges present on the Deusxicef peninsula.

Military

Khomm has a very weak military. Relying on a purely volunteer force, Khomm's forces are under 40,000 men. However, Khomm has one of the most cutting edge air forces in the world, being the first country to weaponize and build aircraft for combat.

Religion

Christianity is the most commonly practiced religion in Khomm. Its origins trace to the 700's, making it one of the last places in Peraquiem for it to take root. The Crestentin religion, spawning from Corsin missionaries, has a much more watered down approach than other Christian divisions. Mixing with native beliefs, including the Arenaian state religion, which was very common in the 700's, the Crestentinism took on a belief system with larger emphasis on community participation. This influence on Crestentin was mostly exclusive to Normijian and Chargestive peoples. It has become the most common religion in Khomm.

Foreign Relations

Khomm has Had shaky diplomatic relations following its defeat in WWI. prior to the war, Khomm was strongly opposed to Corsin and Talgary, both of who had tried-to little success, to invade the three kingdoms, and later the United Khomm Provinces. as such, Corsin and talgary have never liked Khomm, and therefore by extent, Pradewl. Ostedia and Akachuku are major competitors for trade, and as such have little relations. Deule, a nation with similar nationalistic ambitions, has good relations. Jumbia and most other Regellico and Advenusian nations are opposed the Khomm for previous Imperialistic practices. Khomm, due to its distance from Lesparia and Eastern Oparvan nations, have had neutral stances toward.

Agriculture & Industry

Khomm's very wet climate means that barley, rice, sugarcane, and Tobacco are large, profitable crops. Khomm is best known for its transportation and industrial capacity however. Many machines are manufactured in Khomm, used in other factories. Khomm also has several chemical plants and refineries, specializing in commercial grade chemicals used in fertilizers, construction, and other consumer materials. A major use of these refined chemicals is in plastic manufacturing.

Trade & Transport

The use of Khomm as a trading power has declined as Ostedia and later Akachuku became dominant trading partners. Most ships are for locally sourced goods. Khomm has a reasonably developed and maintained interstate system to facilitate trade and movement. Rail lines are common, but are overwhelmingly used for freight transportation.
