Pine Oliphaunt

Oliphaunt silvus

The Pine Oliphaunt roam within and between the pocket pine forests that dot the Northern Siccoran grasslands. They do not reach the great sizes their Eastern relatives achieve, but are still formidable animals, averaging sizes similar to African Forest Elephants. Their four tusks are shorter and straighter than other Oliphaunts, and unlike their relatives have no use outside of combat, used solely to spar with rivals and fend off the Tyrants that hunt them. While healthy guardian bulls are able to fight tyrants on equal ground, calves are especially vulnerable. Thus Pine Oliphaunts spend a majority of their time in the closed pine forests where tyrants have a difficult time moving through. When resources in the pine forest grow slim, the herds must brave the open woodland and grassland teeming with predators more than capable of bringing them down. To maximize protection, oliphaunts travel in a narrow V-formation, with the matriarch at the head while the bull travels just behind the herd to guard the rear while the young stay in the center.
