Church of the Dying Earth

The Church of the Dying Earth is an extremist religious cult that has gained popularity over the past several decades. The Church is believed to be responsible for numerous terrorist attacks around the world, including the catastrophic meltdown of the Johannesburg nuclear reactor in 2059. However, the Church strongly denies the breaking of any laws, and as of yet, prosecutors in multiple nations have been unable to prove a connection between the attacks and the Church.

The Church espouses beliefs that humanity has all but destroyed the Earth, and believes only drastic action can save both the planet and its people. In some aspects it acts as many other environmental activist groups do, but it adds a religious angle to its philosophy. Members are expected to give up their worldly possesions and live simple, environmentally-friendly lives. In some respects, it acts very cult-like.

Most environmental groups have shunned the Church of the Dying Earth, believing them to be politically toxic. According to them, the Church has made accomplishing environmental policy much more difficult, especially due to its links to terrorism. Despite this, the Church continues to grow and is one of the largest environmental policy activist groups in the world. Especially following the destruction of the low-lying Pacific nations in the early 2060s, the group has seen a massive following.

The majority of the Church's members are casual followers, who primarily donate small amounts and watch sermons online. The more active members engage in recruiting (especially online) and political lobbying. The most devoted members and leadership are said to live in isolated compounds in remote regions, far away from the law. This isolation has led to the spread of conspiracy theories as to the purpose of these compounds, and several raids by law enforcement in both the United States and China.
