How Gods Interact with People
There are gods! Lots of gods! And they don't all get along...
People pray to many gods in this world, but a god can only hear them if they are in the presence of that god's holy symbol, and the gods see the world most clearly through their own holy symbols. A farmer could inscribe the holy symbol of a god of rain on their fence posts or their barn and pray to that god for rain, and if that farmer also decided to betray a neighbor and steal from them and hope to get away, they may scrawl the holy symbol of a god of lies into the dirt, mutter a quick prayer, then wipe the symbol away to cover their tracks, and the victim will likely pray near a symbol of a god of justice or law for the offending thief to be caught. Similarly, a priest of a god of justice could change and become corrupt, but hide their misdeeds from the holy symbol, and hope that their deeds don't get uncovered; for if they do and word gets back to the offended god, woe to the cleric who abused their name. Sometimes the other clergy will simply excommunicate you, perhaps your god will be able to remove the imprinted power they'd given you, or if neither of those is possible, a celestial in service to that deity may commission a mortal bounty hunter with a warlock pact to hunt down the heretic.
