Attaining Divinity

Mortals can become gods, on very rare occasions. In order to become a god, you must kill a god, but simply killing a god isn't enough. If you kill a god, there's a short time afterward that you can claim some of its divinity for yourself, but you can only do so if you already have a large following of people who believe that you are deserving of divinity. Their belief in you acts as a catalyst that allows you to tap into the rapidly decaying power of a dying god before it disappears. This will permanently transform you into a divinity, capable of granting divine power to your followers, and permanently seating you in one of the spiritual outer planes.
Not only is this task nearly impossible, but should one begin to take the steps toward this, gods who take notice may fear that you will target them, and may preemptively kill you, or conveniently summon you to heaven to reduce your time on earth. Also, most gods who have been killed have managed to return eventually, and do so with a score to settle.
For the opportunistic mortal, there's sometimes a payoff to paying homage and worship to a dead god; if they return, they are often known to bestow great power to those who continued to devote themselves to the cause, and grant incredible power to those who may have actually helped them return.
One some very rare occasions, a group of gods may be so impressed with a mortal, that they collectively decide that mortal should become a god. They usually will try to help that mortal kill an enemy god, but occasionally will instead decide to give of their own power to elevate the chosen mortal. If it came from one god, that god would die to transfer the power, but a group of gods won't die, they'll be severely weakened, likely for centuries afterward, but could live on to recover from the wound they take. Again, this mortal must have the strong devotion of thousands of followers in order to even be eligible for such power.
