Bosmebjørn
"These massive beasts are docile enough to even approach and study close. I observed from between the forelimbs of a particularly friendly calf just how gentle these giants can be. Any wise hunter knows however that attempting to pierce the flesh of one is to invite this creature to trample your bones into the snow." From the research notes of Master Hunter Xion
Bosmebjørn are gentle herbivores that roam all across the snow covered lands of Bn'ergia and their native homeland Revalia. Thick furred and heavily muscled, the bosmebjørn rarely stray from the coldest valleys and hills of the lands, preferring to move in their herds of dozens across the open areas. Despite their powerful appearance, bosmebjørn are incredibly docile and many have been tamed as pets to ride by the tribes of Hakon in Bn'ergia and by outerlander tribes in Revalia.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Bosmebjørn are quadrupedal creatures with cloven rear hooves and prehensile, multi-fingered appendages for their forelimbs. They bear anywhere from two to six bovine horns that curl in different directions atop their head, useful for the creatures to dig and push through snow or to help with lifting heavy rocks. They are heavily muscled and densely furred with long thick, cow-like tails. Their faces are flat-nosed to help in pushing away snow and mud in order to reach fresh greens and they have broad, flat teeth that help in stripping bark which they eat.
Genetics and Reproduction
Bosmebjørn reach sexual maturity around two to three years old and gestate for nearly 300 days. The calf stays with its mother closely for a year but tends to remain with the herd for life- excepting some particularly large or aggressive males who will break away from their herd to start their own. Female bosmebjørn never have more than a single calf.
Growth Rate & Stages
Bosmebjørn are born and spend the next year close to their mother, despite the fact they grow relatively quickly they are most susceptible to predators as small calves. By the time they are adolescents at eight to ten months- bosmebjørn are large and strong enough they are rarely hunted by anything but humans. They reach adulthood around a year and a half to two years and sexual maturity by two or three. Bosmebjørn live to around twenty or twenty-five years old.
Ecology and Habitats
Bosmebjørn prefer cold environments due to their heavy muscles and thick furs and prefer to stick with the open areas of their country, grazing comfortably on the edges of forests and amongst grasslands- easily pushing aside snow, mud or ice to find the nutrients they need.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Bosmebjørn are herbivores who primarily thrive on the grasses hidden beneath snow, but also eat the leaves of trees and bushes, as well as the berries and even roots.
Biological Cycle
Due to the near perpetual winter of its homelands, most bosmebjørn don't have strong seasonal habits although they do shed their thicker undercoats every spring which is frequently used as stuffing for pillows, bedding or lining to help in warming up the locals of Revalia and Bn'ergia.
