Personal history

It is unknown who Mastema's father was precisely, but their mother was the mortal human Áris. Most of what follows is recorded on the Zadokite Fragments, and has not necessarily been confirmed as factual.   Thousands of years ago, during one of the wars between the angelic and demonic hosts, the Watchers, extremely powerful angels, attempted to remain neutral. Angered by this betrayal, the angelic hosts flooded the world via the Great Deluge, trapping the Watchers deep underground.   Mastema was chief of the nephilim at this time, and led them alongside their ancestors, the Watchers, in neutrality. The Watchers, sensing their ultimate fate, led the nephilim to the Promised Land, an area of the Otherworld safe from the machinations of the angelic host.   One angel, Manda, came to see Mastema before the Great Deluge, and offered an exchange: their family, who had been captured by the angelic host, for the location of the rest of the nephilim. Mastema agreed to these terms, and the nephilim were wiped out. After this, the bones of their family members were returned by Azrael, as Manda had never claimed that they would be returned alive.   Following this, Mastema traveled the world attempting to resurrect the Watchers, so that they could bring back their family and change the course of history. Even as they neared death, they were still no closer to his goal. Due to this, Mastema constructed a phylactery and encased their soul within it, thereby becoming an immortal lich.   Rumor has it that Mastema still wanders Eana today searching for answers, but finding none.
