The Lost Mountain

So think Salem Witch Trials except the witches actually had magic and they sort of escaped/won

Summary

When the Church of the Sun outlawed the practice of magic, the mages of the South uprooted the very mountain the First Temple was built upon, and left with it, neither to be seen again for thousands of years.

Historical Basis

Although several hundred years had passed since The Fires of Extinction, the tales of Men were filled with vivid horror stories of the apocalyptic fires that very nearly wiped them out. Magicians were to blame, and no sensible Man could trust them. And as their civilization evolved and they depended on magic less and less, resentment grew towards the magic folk.

[stuff happens, then]Southerners began actively seeking out witches and wizards to kill. Unlike most earthly witch killings, Southerners would only execute magicians by decapitation, for certain magics could manipulate water and fire to prevent burning and drowning.

However, the magicians of the South were far more organized than the hunters expected. Under the direction of several powerful sorcerers, a plan was made. A spell, powerful enough to rival the Fires of Extinction. Immediately magicians set the plan in motion, meditating, finding ingredients, preparing. In less than two weeks, the day came.

In the night a great fog had settled over the mountains. Just before the Sun's first rays of light could reach over the horizon, a massive circle of magicians gathered around the base of Mount Emas, home to the First Temple of the Church of the Sun. A hum rose into the misty air, gaining volume as one by one the magicians one by one took up the note. Harpys circled in the sky, waiting. As the singers rose up their voices, a new hum joined them. It came from the very earth beneath their feet. The mist grew agitated and thick, swirling around the mountain until only the peak could be seen.

The mountain rose above the mist, and as the sun finally struck it, the Temple caught fire, shining like a beacon in the sky. Sunlight raced over the mountain, and with it came bright, hungry flames.

[the mountain rose into the sky and was never seen again]
