Mental characteristics

Personal history

Slavery
Zael was born into House Trenavyr, a lesser noble house in the Drow matriarchy. From a young age, he was groomed to be a ruthless and efficient killer, devoid of emotion or morality. Despite the indoctrination, there was always a flicker of defiance within him, a light that refused to be extinguished by the darkness of his surroundings. House Trenavyr primarily worshipped Lolth, the Spider Queen, and Calistria as a secondary deity. Elendar was taught the ways of Calistria, particularly her Vengeful Sting, but was constantly reminded that his primary allegiance was to Lolth.   Despite the risks involved in worshiping any deity other than Lolth, Zael found solace and empowerment in the clandestine rituals dedicated to Calistria, seeking her guidance and protection in a world filled with cruelty and injustice. In the privacy of his own thoughts, he would offer prayers and invocations to the goddess, entreating her to grant him the strength and cunning to endure the hardships of his existence and to seek vengeance against those who wronged him.   Zael's worship of Calistria was marked by rituals of secrecy and subterfuge, conducted in hidden alcoves and secluded chambers deep within the labyrinthine tunnels of the Underdark. With whispered incantations and offerings of stolen goods and trinkets salvaged from the refuse of his oppressors, he would seek to appease the goddess and earn her favor.   In these clandestine rites, Zael would channel his righteous anger and desire for revenge into acts of devotion, drawing strength from the belief that Calistria would one day grant him the opportunity to exact retribution upon those who had wronged him.
Spark of Rebellion
As a young Drow slave in the oppressive society of the Underdark, Zael was accustomed to witnessing acts of cruelty and brutality. However, when he was 112, one particular incident left a lasting impression on him and played a significant role in shaping his beliefs and motivations.   It was a typical day in the dark, twisting tunnels of the Underdark, with the ever-present threat of danger looming over every inhabitant. Zael was toiling away under the watchful eyes of his cruel overlords, enduring the harsh conditions of his existence with resigned acceptance.   But on this fateful day, the oppressive atmosphere was shattered by the screams of a fellow slave, a young girl who had committed the minor offense of mispronouncing the name of her mistress. The punishment for her transgression was swift and merciless.   In a cruel display of power and dominance, the girl was dragged before the assembled crowd of slaves and masters, her fate sealed by the unforgiving laws of the matriarchal society. With cold detachment, the mistress ordered the girl's punishment to commence.   Zael watched in horror as the girl was subjected to a barbaric ritual of punishment, her screams echoing off the cavern walls as her flesh was flayed from her bones, all for the simple crime of a minor linguistic error. The brutality of the punishment, coupled with the callous indifference of those in power, ignited a spark of righteous anger within Zael's soul.   In that moment, he vowed to never again stand idly by in the face of injustice and oppression. The memory of the girl's suffering would fuel his determination to rebel against the oppressive regime of the Drow, and ultimately, to lead his people to freedom and liberation.   From that day forth, Zael's path was set on a course of defiance and rebellion against the oppressive forces that sought to crush the spirit of the downtrodden. The memory of the girl's suffering would serve as a constant reminder of the atrocities committed in the name of power and domination, driving Zael to fight tirelessly for a future where such injustices were no longer tolerated.
Escape
Not much later after this event, House Trenavyr managed to subjugate a larger, more important Drow House, causing their own power within the matriarchy to grow considerably. They threw a celebratory feast, which proved to be quite tumultuous. It was here that Zael found himself presented with a fleeting opportunity for escape. Amidst the revelry and debauchery that characterized such events, the guards and overseers of the slave pits were momentarily distracted, their attention consumed by the festivities unfolding around them.   Seizing upon this moment of distraction, Zael sprang into action, his heart pounding with adrenaline as he surveyed his surroundings for any sign of weakness or vulnerability. Drawing upon his combat training, honed through the years of brutal servitude in the gladiatorial pits of the Underdark, he moved with purpose and determination, his every movement calculated to maximize his chances of success.   Utilizing his intimate knowledge of the labyrinthine tunnels and passages that crisscrossed the Darklands, Zael navigated the chaotic scene with skill and precision, slipping through the shadows like a phantom as he sought out a route to freedom. His senses attuned to the sounds and smells of his surroundings, he remained ever vigilant for any sign of pursuit, ready to elude capture at a moment's notice.   As he raced through the twisting corridors of the Underdark, Zael's mind raced with thoughts of the life that awaited him beyond the oppressive confines of his former existence. With each step he took towards freedom, he felt a surge of hope and determination coursing through his veins, driving him ever onward in his quest for liberation.   Finally, after what felt like an eternity of desperate flight, Zael emerged into the cold, unforgiving embrace of the open caverns, his lungs burning with exertion as he gulped in the stale, oppressive air of the Underdark. Though the path ahead was fraught with danger and uncertainty, he knew that he had taken the first crucial step towards carving out a new destiny for himself in a world where freedom was not just a distant dream, but a tangible reality waiting to be seized.
Fugitive
Zael's time as a fugitive was marked by a series of harrowing escapades as he traversed the perilous expanse of the Underdark. Navigating the twisting tunnels and caverns, he encountered a myriad of dangers, from lurking predators to treacherous traps laid by rival factions. Yet amidst the chaos and uncertainty, Zael found himself drawn to the diverse array of individuals who also sought refuge in the dark depths.   Among the orcish warbands that roamed the upper levels of the Darklands, Zael discovered a temporary haven, offering his services as a skilled warrior in exchange for protection and shelter. In the rugged camaraderie of these warriors, he found a sense of belonging, if only for a fleeting moment, as they regaled each other with tales of conquest and survival around crackling campfires.   Beyond the orcish territories, Zael encountered a motley crew of outcasts and adventurers, each with their own reasons for braving the dangers of the Underdark. From enigmatic Drow renegades to eccentric gnomish tinkerers, he forged brief alliances born of necessity and mutual survival. Together, they faced the myriad perils of the Underdark, united by their shared struggle against the oppressive forces that sought to crush their spirits.   Throughout his journey, Zael remained steadfast in his devotion to Calistria. In moments of solitude, he offered fervent prayers to The Savored Sting, beseeching her to grant him the strength and guidance to fulfill his oath of vengeance against Lolth. With each whispered invocation, his resolve grew stronger, fueling his determination to confront the dark goddess and reclaim his stolen freedom.
A New Faith
As Zael wandered through the labyrinthine tunnels of the Underdark, his heart heavy with the weight of his past and the uncertainty of his future, he found himself increasingly disillusioned with the cruel and oppressive society of his birth. It was amidst this inner turmoil that he encountered the divine presence of Eilistraee, her form bathed in a soft, ethereal glow that pierced through the suffocating darkness of the caverns.   As she spoke, her voice carried the warmth of a thousand suns, soothing the wounds of his battered soul and igniting a spark of hope within him that had long lay dormant. With each word, she wove a tapestry of possibility and promise, offering him a vision of a world where freedom reigned supreme and compassion was the guiding light that illuminated the path forward.   In that moment, the veil of doubt that had shrouded Zael's mind was lifted, and he beheld a new reality—one where the chains of oppression forged by Lolth's tyranny were shattered, and the Drow were free to embrace their true potential without fear or prejudice. Inspired by Eilistraee's unwavering faith in the inherent goodness of all beings, Zael felt a newfound sense of purpose swell within him, driving him to embrace the path of rebellion and defiance against the forces of darkness that sought to keep him bound.   With Eilistraee's guidance, Zael embarked on a journey of self-discovery and transformation, shedding the shackles of his past and embracing the boundless possibilities of the future. Eilistraee's revelation shook Zael to his core, challenging the beliefs instilled in him since birth and offering him a glimpse of a future free from the shackles of oppression. Inspired by her message of unity and acceptance, he found refuge among a band of Eilistraee's followers, Drow who had bravely rejected Lolth's rule and sought to forge a new destiny for themselves.
The World Above
Embracing the teachings of Eilistraee, Zael and his newfound companions emerged from the depths of the Underdark into the vast expanse of the surface world. As they journeyed across verdant plains, towering mountains, and shimmering seas, they encountered a diverse tapestry of cultures, races, and civilizations unlike anything they had ever known.   For Zael, the world above was a revelation—a place where beings of every shape and size had the potential to coexist in harmony, united by bonds of friendship and mutual respect. From the bustling cities of humans to the tranquil groves of elves, he witnessed firsthand the beauty and complexity of a world unbound by the chains of Lolth's tyranny.   Driven by a deep-seated desire to bring this spirit of unity and acceptance to the darkened depths of the Underdark, Zael embarked on a journey of diplomacy and outreach unlike any he had undertaken before. With Eilistraee's teachings as his guide, he sought to bridge the divide between the disparate factions and races that dwelled in the subterranean realms, laying the groundwork for a future of cooperation.   With each alliance forged and each bridge built, Zael felt a sense of purpose and fulfillment unlike any he had ever known. Though he knew that the path ahead would be fraught with challenges and obstacles, he remained undeterred in his quest to bring about lasting change in the world he called home.   When he would journey through the labyrinthine tunnels and caverns of the Underdark, Zael encountered resistance and skepticism from those who clung to the old ways of division and strife. Yet he refused to be swayed from his chosen path, drawing strength from the memory of Eilistraee's radiant presence and the unwavering support of his companions.   With each step he took towards his goal, Zael remained steadfast in his commitment to building a brighter future for all who dwelled in the darkened depths of the Underdark. Forged in the crucible of adversity and shaped by the guiding hand of Eilistraee, he stood ready to confront the challenges that lay ahead and to lead his people toward a new era of unity, acceptance, and freedom.
Alliances
As Zael's journey continued, his unwavering resolve and steadfast commitment to his cause attracted the attention of individuals from diverse backgrounds, drawn to his sincerity and the depth of his convictions. Among these allies stood Gashnag, a fierce Orc Warrior whose strength and loyalty matched Zael's own. Despite their differences in race and upbringing, Gashnag recognized in Zael a kindred spirit, a fellow warrior fighting against the injustices of the world.   Alongside Gashnag stood Thalia, a wood elf whose grace and wisdom captivated Zael from their first meeting. As their relationship blossomed, Thalia became not only his lover but also his trusted confidante, her insights and intuition guiding him through the trials and tribulations that lay ahead.   With Gashnag and Thalia by his side, Zael's circle of allies grew stronger, each member bringing their own unique strengths and perspectives to the table. Together, they weathered countless challenges and faced down formidable foes, their bonds forged in the crucible of adversity and strengthened by their shared determination to bring about change in the world.   In the midst of their journey, Zael and Gashnag struck a pact born of mutual respect and shared ambition. Recognizing the parallels in their struggles against oppressive rulers, they vowed to aid each other in overthrowing the tyrants that held their respective peoples in thrall. With Gashnag's support, Zael would lead the charge against Lolth's dominion, while Gashnag would stand by his side. In return, Zael would do the same for Gashnag.   In the presence of Eilistraee and her followers, Zael's resolve was further fortified, his commitment to their cause reaffirmed in the radiant glow of the goddess's divine presence. With each passing day, his faith in Eilistraee's vision grew stronger, fueling his determination to fight for a future where all beings, regardless of race or creed, could live in peace and freedom.   As Zael stood on the precipice of destiny, he knew that the road ahead would be fraught with peril and uncertainty. Yet with his allies at his side and Eilistraee's blessings guiding his every step, he faced the future with unwavering confidence, ready to confront whatever challenges lay in wait as he forged a new path for himself and his people.
Fight Against Tyranny
In time, Zael ventured back into the unknown depths of the Underdark, his heart ablaze with the fervent desire to carve out a new destiny for himself and his brethren—a destiny forged in the fires of liberation and tempered by the steadfast resolve to never again bow to the yoke of tyranny. With his allies by his side, Zael embarked on a campaign of resistance against the oppressive forces of Lolth's dominion, rallying like-minded individuals to his cause and spreading the message of unity and freedom throughout the darkened tunnels of the Underdark.   Together with Gashnag, Thalia, and a host of other allies, Zael waged war against the agents of Lolth, striking at the heart of her power and challenging her authority at every turn. Eilistraee, recognizing the righteousness of their cause, lent her divine support to their efforts, empowering Zael and his companions with her blessings and guiding their steps with her divine wisdom.   As the flames of rebellion spread throughout the Underdark, Eilistraee made a fateful decision to officially declare war against Lolth and her minions, signaling the beginning of a conflict that would rage for centuries to come. In a gesture of respect for the pact between Zael and Gashnag, Eilistraee bestowed immortality upon the Orc warrior, ensuring that he would stand by Zael's side for all eternity as they fought to free their people from the shackles of oppression.   The war that followed was a brutal and bloody affair, with countless lives lost on both sides as the forces of freedom clashed with the legions of Lolth's followers. From the deepest caverns to the highest spires, the echoes of battle reverberated through the Underdark, as Zael and his allies waged a relentless campaign against their oppressors, refusing to yield in the face of overwhelming odds.   Despite the hardships and sacrifices endured along the way, Zael remained steadfast in his determination to see the war through to its conclusion, driven by the memory of all those who had suffered under Lolth's tyranny and the hope of a brighter future for his people. With each passing year, his resolve only grew stronger, his faith in Eilistraee's vision unwavering as he continued to lead the fight for freedom against the forces of darkness.
Ascension
Zael's journey towards divinity was not one driven by personal ambition or a thirst for power, but rather by a deep-seated commitment to justice and the liberation of his people. Throughout his life, he had fought tirelessly against the oppressive forces of Lolth's tyranny, leading his allies in a relentless struggle for freedom and equality in the Underdark.   During this war, the other Drow gods of the Dark Seldarine found themselves dead or without power. It was amidst the chaos and carnage of the final battle against Lolth that Zael's destiny reached its zenith. Armed with the legendary Crescent Blade of Eilistraee, he faced off against the dark goddess in a climactic showdown that would determine the fate of the Underdark. With each strike of his blade, he unleashed the full fury of his righteous wrath, determined to end the reign of tyranny and usher in a new era of hope and freedom for his people.   In a moment of divine reckoning, Zael delivered the fatal blow that would seal Lolth's fate, striking her down with a ferocity born of years of struggle and sacrifice. As her deific essence flowed into him, he felt the raw power of divinity coursing through his veins, transforming him into something more than mortal, something transcendent and eternal.   With his ascension to godhood, Zael shed his mortal name and took on the mantle of Elendar, the Divine Rebel, a symbol of defiance and liberation for all who would follow him. As the new ruler of the Underdark, he led his people out of the shadow of Lolth's tyranny and into a future of freedom and prosperity and fulfilled his pact with Gashnag, overthrowing the malevolent Orc gods that held their people back, resulting in Gashnag also ascending to godhood.   But Elendar's journey was far from over. With the same determination and resolve that had carried him through countless battles, he turned his attention to the other malevolent gods that had long held sway over the Underdark, vowing to overthrow them and bring an end to their reign of terror once and for all.   In a series of epic battles and cunning stratagems, Elendar and his allies succeeded in toppling the dark pantheon, casting down the false gods and ushering in a new era of divine rule in the Underdark. With each victory, his legend grew, and his divine power flourished, as he ruled over his people with wisdom and compassion, guiding them toward a future of unity and prosperity.   And by his side stood Thalia, his beloved companion and divine herald, whose unwavering faith and boundless compassion had been instrumental in his journey to godhood. Together, they ruled over the Underdark as champions of justice and freedom, their names spoken in reverence by all who dared to defy the forces of darkness and oppression.
