The War of the Wastrel Emperor

The most recent civil war was 75 years prior to the present day; Garian III, hated by his people for his wastrel ways, known after his reign as the Craven Emperor, was blessed with two daughters and a son before the death of his wife. His eldest daughter, Lyrran, coveted the throne and was loved by the people, but the traditions of succession demanded the throne pass to the eldest son in the line of succession; in time she inspired a rebellion against the Craven Emperor. The sitting Prince of Tor Serryn died, and his heir seemed determined to support Lyrran in her push to take the empire. In response, Garian attempted to elevate another family to the position of Visduch and name them Prince of Serryn. This sparked open rebellion. Serryn marched on the capital of Tor Huma, and ships from Deis embarked from Tor Deis with armed forces to resupply the invading forces. Tor Huma was besieged and for a time it looked as if the ancient city would fall. Garian III asked for parley to discuss the possiblity of surrender.   Once the council of parley was within the city, Garian III ambushed the council, killing the heir to Serryn and his daughter's lieutenants, and finally putting his daughter to the sword on the walls of Tor Huma, throwing her body over the edge to land before her gathered forces below.   Forces from Tor Harrian, still loyal to the Craven Emperor, were but a day's march away and it looked as if the siege of Tor Huma might be broken, when on the night of his sister's death, the Craven Emperor's son, Sterran, came to him in his bedchamber under the pretense of discussing the war, and killed him in his bed. In the name of the Craven Emperor, Sterran commanded that the gates of the city be thrown open and commanded the imperial guard to stand down. The city fell with minimal bloodshed; by the dawn of the next day, as the forces of Tor Harrian ended their march on the steppes below the wall of Tor Huma, the civil war was over.   Before sunset that day, the leaders of Harrian, Sionis, Serryn and Deis assembled in the throne room of the Imperial Palace in Tor Huma to discuss the matter of succession. After much debate, the Princes and Visduchs agreed to bow the knee to Sterran in order to restore peace within the Empire. Sterran accepted their fealty, and as his first act as Emperor, before the court, proclaimed that the line of succession would henceforth pass to the firstborn child of the line regardless of gender. He then fell upon his sword before the two princes, confessing his crime of regicide.   Rulership of the Empire passed to Garian's youngest daughter, Elarryn, who as her first proclamation, still grieving the loss of her father and siblings, pardoned the rebel Visduchs, restoring peace to the sundered Empire.
