Session 20: The Fall of Oakenheel

Skulk's Notes
The grouped continued their push through Cragmaw Castle. Leaving behind what sounded like imprisoned Owlbears, the group came across the Keep’s Leadership. A battle ensued with King Grol and his wolf, The Glasstaff, and a Drow woman who appeared to be some manner of monk. King Grol called for aid with a warhorn, and a second wave crashed upon us from behind. Skulk, Theren, and finally Tordek were knocked unconscious as Xolotl single-handedly duelled a Hobgoblin captain and his men. As the fight drew to a close, Xolotl revived Tordek and they finished off the last wave of Hobgoblins that Grol had called forth. Reviving Skulk, we discovered that Theren had died of his injuries in the battle. The Glasstaff was alive, if horribly disfigured. Xolotl made sure he did not re-awaken by conducting one of his rituals. The fight over, we also revived a delver who had been questioned by the group. It was Sildar’s friend Gundren. He told us of our enemies plans and we also discovered his map pointing to the lost mine of Phandellin. We considered leaving, but instead pushed on to finish clearing the castle. We came upon a shrine with Goblins and their priest, squabbling over who should become the leader of the Cragmaws following Grol's demise, and finished them off. One nearly escaping, but we ran him down at the edge of the forrest. After making a final sweep of the keep Xolotl laid a trail of Goblin corpses from the Owlbear hold to the outside and we released them, while seeking cover in the next room. Slowly, the weary group left Cragmaw Castle behind them and sought rest in the wilderness as they journeyed back to Phandalin, escorting Gundren and the body of their fallen comrade, Theren. As a new day dawned, the Triad looked favourably on Tordek, granting him a great steed, a powerful warhorse, as they crested the final hills before the outskirts of town.
