Session 19: Assault on Cragmaw I
General Summary
The wind gusted through the night as the group took what rest could be had after the attack by the warg riders, and in the morning we continued our journey towards Cragmaw Castle. On the way we came across a farm. With thoughts of Mylla’s ordeal still fresh in our minds we risked investigating.
The fields were untended, but in the depths of winter that was not unusual. The house was adorned although bore no recent signs of activity. Shortly before leaving Theren discovered a locked cellar door. We took a look but found only a few bags and crates we decided to leave for the owner should they return. With nothing amiss we set things back into order and locked the cellar.
Up into the foothills we climbed, making our way through to Cragmaw Castle. After havinng some difficulty with the terrain, Tordek's eye for detail managed to place the party back on track. We’d only lost a few hours time in the hills. As night fell, we arrived at the outskirts of Cragmaw Castle, nestled within a narrow gully, dotted by trees. Theren’s familiar, Solmuus, and then Skulk investigated the castle for an entry point. The front doors were broken open, and some of the towers had collapsed segments. At the south of the castle there was a strange, crooning growl coming from one of the darkened towers. During Skulk's reconnaisance he was spotted, but managed to dodge a thrown javelin and slink back into the trees unseen. Ultimately it was from the south in a small postern gate we decided to make our strike.
After Skulk slipped ahead to open the door for the group, the others snuck up and filed in. The first room was a banquet hall, filled with rowdy goblins feasting. Tordek led the charge into the room, and though he took many wounds he left a path of Goblin’s corpses in his wake. The rest of the party followed, similarly acquitting themselves, all taking injuries from the vicious goblins as they darted and dodged around the room, retreating to one of the guard towers to find reinforcements, firing arrows and hacking with their crude scimitars. The only person to remain uninjured was Xolotl.
As the last of the reinforcements were dealt with, we gathered ourselves and with some healing from Xolotl and Tordek, we doubled back and entered the eastern wing of the castle. Here some hobgoblin’s surprised Skulk as he entered, and he retreated to a corner and held out for the others to arrive. Working together we cut them down in short order.
From the south we heard that same somber crooning sound coming from behind a door...
