Pelenspayar

Pelenspayar is an elven mountain fortress established at the close of the Time of Dragon Kings in order to protect the only pass through the maelstrom of Typhus against draconic incursion. The wyverns who nested in and around the mountains of Wyvernspur were awakened by a druid circle, who also bound the spirit of the ancient, slumbering air primordial Typhus in order to imprison the remaining dragons within the region of the southern continent known as the Scaled Defiles.
At it's height, Wyvernspur hosted over 100 riders. It was one of a pair of fortresses devoted to combating dragons - Pelenspayar to the south established to keep the remaining dragons penned into the Defiles, and Brinderweyr, to the north, devoted to hunting down those dragons who either escaped Pelenspayar's patrols, or who remained free of the imprisonment after The Dragon Kings were overthrown.   The fortress is massive and mostly built into the rock of the mountaintops itself. The rear of the fortress, to the west, is protected by a massive portcullis. A long stair winds through the mountain to the main courtyard and then into the keep itself. To the east, a battlement stretches between two mountain peaks and is fortified against dragon attacks. Powerful siege weapons are stationed there but the true power of Wuvernspur lies in its wyverns. Beneath the fortress is the arena and in tunnels stretching out from the arena are the wyvern nests themselves.   As draconic incursions grew less frequent, goodwill towards Pelenspayar began to sour. Local landholders began to withhold supplies and tithes and the position of wyvernrider - once held in high esteem - became one of derision.   In 1620 TER, the first dragon attack in almost a century and a half occurred when Irazes, the Bitter End, Zitonai, the Burnished Huntress, and the young green dragon Venomfang attacked an unprepared Pelenspayar. At the time of the attack they numbered only nine riders. Irazes was ridden by a Human woman who had visited the fortress recently and named herself [Sestis]. Evendwyn, the Skymarshall of Pelenspayar was slain in the battle, and her wyvern, the gold queen Cequis, was wounded.   In the aftermath of the battle, Cequis now refuses to take another rider and thus a new Skymarshall has not been declared. Draconians now roam the defiles, attacking the settlements below. Several further draconic pushes have been repulsed, but two further dragons are known to have made it past Pelenspayar's defenses.
