Westwood Light

Located on Abanasinia's west coast, on a rocky cape that juts out into the Straits of Algoni, Westwood Light is one of the modern wonders of Ansalon—a working, automatic lighthouse. Designed and built by minoi from Sancrist, Westwood Light marks an area of dangerous shoals and deadly currents that extends from the cape into the straits for roughly 15 miles. It is that rarest of things, a piece of gnome-built technology that actually works. It's said that even a blind dwarf hits the anvil now and then, and it's clear from the light's success that the gnome who designed it was possessed of a singular genius. The light itself is a 150-foot-tall, flat-topped conical tower set atop an octagonal base built on bedrock. At its peak, the tower contains a contraption made of glass lenses, brass, steel, and countless gears of every size that not only produces a focused, rotating beam of light that can be seen up to 30 miles away, but also a low, mournful howling for use in heavy fog or rain. How it generates light and sound or works at all is anyone's guess, but work it does.
