New Ports

The city of New Ports was founded by a powerful merchant and shipping captain roughly 20 years after the Cataclysm. The natural deepwater harbor on the southeast coast of Abanasinia seemed the perfect place to build a port to trade with the elves in Qalinost and the dwarves in Kal-Thax. Before long, New Ports was a bustling port town bringing goods from western Ansalon across Newsea to Abanasinia.
New Ports is the second busiest port in Abanasinia, just behind Crossing. While the larger port's commerce is mostly with Solamnia, New Ports serves Schallsea Island and the various ports of central and eastern Newsea. All of Haven's trade is shipped from New Ports, and before the War of the Lance, both Qualinost and Thorbardin shipped goods to and from the town as well. Recently, with the closing of Qualinesti's borders and the scouring of Haven, New Ports has lost a large percentage of its trade. While it was largely made up by the reopening of our borders and a resumption of shipping, New Ports is still struggling as it searches for new markets and clients.
As it was founded by a shipping captain, the city is run like a ship—a very taut, well-drilled, professional ship. New Ports' government is run by the heads of each major guild and shipping concern, with each guild head responsible for a particular department or division. Every two years, a new "captain" is chosen from the guild leaders to act as a figurehead and de facto mayor who answers to both the council and the people of New Ports. Captains can be recalled at any time for poor performance, and particularly bad or corrupt captains are hanged from a ship's yardarm as punishment and a warning to others.
Currently, New Ports is led by Captain Helena Aubreii, a stern but fair shipping magnate in her autumn years. She's been in power just shy of a year, and her tenure so far has been quiet, peaceful, and efficient. She's overseen the largest increase in shipping revenues since before the War and is wildly popular with both the Guild Council and the populace at large.

Many of you have seen New Ports during your service in the War of the Lance. It's a touch quieter than Crossing and more used to dwarven ways. There's even a sizeable dwarven population there, so it may be a good place to stop for rest and resupply on the way to Haven. If you need river or sea passage, look up Pumice Hammerhand. He runs a shipping business there and his office is along Atwater Street near the Block and Tackle Inn. —BT
