Whisperer

Whisperers are central to Duranin society. Acting as healers and arcane crafters to their tribe, they ensure the wellbeing of their communities as they explore the untapped knowledge of the arcane. They are expected to be wise and brave, safekeeping the secrets of their trade trough generations. When Whisperers embark on their Last Travel, it is a moment of crucial importance in a tribe, as their successor takes their place and their responsibilities.

Career

Qualifications

Whisperers are chosen from generation to generation within tribes. Both Elders and Whisperer have a say in choosing the successor, but the final decision always belongs to the Elders. They are usually particularly wise children/teens, or those that demonstrate a demonstrable resistance to the corruption of power and violence. Once chosen, the successor will be trained and groomed into their new role until the standing Whisperer passes on or departs for their Last Travel, leaving them the incumbent responsibilities.

Perception

Social Status

Whisperers are amongst the most respected members of their societies, due to their importance in keeping the tribe in good health, as well as the considerable that is put upon their shoulders.

Power Check

By accepting the mantle of Whisperer, an individual renounces to their political voice within the tribe. They are barred from assemblies, and are never put in charge of any role beyond the one assigned to Whisperers. In a way, they become a vessel for the collective spirit of the tribe, acting in accordance with collective decisions and as a representative to other tribes. However, that responsibility comes with a strict accountability, barring them from betraying any decisions made by their community.

Author's Notes

The role of the Whisperer, apart from the fantasy element, is inspired by the role of leaders within Haudenosaune communities as described by French anthropologist Pierre Clastres in his article "La question du pouvoir dans les sociétés primitives" (1976).
