Bounder

The Bounders are a dispersed order of holy knights, in service of Palavor. As befitting their patron, they are tasked with patrolling the borders of civilisation and maintaining the difficult balance: Meeting the needs of settlements while limiting the destruction of the wilds is an almost impossible task.

Duties

In practice, Bounders are called on for monster hunting assignments, making the profession dangerous, and it's practitioners often short-lived. A bounder might also be called on to protect a caravan, aid the siting of a new logging camp or maintain fences in remote regions. Well-reputed Bounders (those that have survived two winters) are requested to accompany settlement teams seeking to found new villages.   Bounders are trained and based at Palavorian temples, normally found around larger settlements. The majority of their time is spent on field missions, normally outside of city limits.   When time and circumstance permit, a Bounder might petition to speak with local leaders and council against expansion that threatens the surrounding wilds. This is the other side of the balance they seek to maintain, but it success here is rare. Wilds rarely wave angry fists under the noses of Bounders, or rage at them for failing to rescue a loved one. But a Bounder knows that the wrath of the Wilds will be felt eventually, and so they continue this aspect of their task despite the unpopularity it causes.

Training

Training involves the natural martial requirements, and development of divine potential. However, a Bounder is taught to seek a compromise in every situation they encounter. Thus they are also taught negotiation strategies, and even the languages of the more monstrous denizens of Durath. Though fraught with risk, it is better to face an orc chieftain across a cooking fire than a battlefield.   Bounders whose missions end in failure are rarely recovered for proper funerary rites. Their training and routines reinforce a healthy respect for their own mortality, that their soul might find rest that escape their body.
