History

The Azarketi began their lives as sacrifies to the Aboleth in exchange for their protection. These sacrifices were subjected to horrifying experiments, their fundamental beings altered and augmented by the Aboleth in profane experiments known only to them. Their service compelled through the the administration of an addictive slime which dulled pain and psionic resistance.   They acted as the middle-men between the Aboleth and the populace. Regional governors, petty tyrants, and local generals. The members of the Thalassic Order were particularly feared as crushers of dissent and purveyors of the Aboleth's will. No friend was met, no meal was had, no harvest taken that was not known to The Order.   There were of course, those who resisted. Even the darkest of the Aboleth desings cannot extinguish the high races' desire for freedom. However, due to the heavy effects of withdrawal, dissenting Azarketi were doomed to a long, agonizing death.   During the course of the War of Liberation, the Azarketi realized that they were being used as much as the other populace of the islands. Ethrane suffered the pains   When the dust settled and the Islands were once again free, there was no home for the Azarketi. Deposed from their positions of privelege, the gillfolk were left to the mercy of the people, and they demanded blood for the years of terror. Some found respite in the Panoptica, others with the Saltwardens, and still others with the Auroreum. Quisil, the crying isle became their home.   A steady march of tolerance accelerated by the attempted Noromaeni colonization have ensured that the Azarketi of today do not face the same prejudices as their ancestors. Though this is of small comfort to the gillfolk blamed for every missing child and every accident at sea.
