After the death of my mother at an early age of 15, I decided to start mining to support my family, but I delved into study as well. My father saw the necessity for mining, but was also the driving factor that made sure I knew the value of studying and making it out of the mines one day. He gave me this ring at that time to facilitate my learning and worked double hard instead of trying to make it out himself. Little did he know he would die 5 years later in a mining accident. This shifted my focus of study from a more general purpose to learning how to heal others so that didn’t happen again, and certainly not to myself. I have to provide for my disabled grandfather and the rest of my family. I eventually became too valuable to have mining in dangerous areas since I healed so many that needed it. It took a while and learning how to use explosives as well to get much needed raises and other promotions that I could even start to think about getting out of Hammersend.
The person who helped show me the inner workings of the politics of the mining community, Torbal Ingutt, died one night on a cursory investigation into the structural integrity of one of the mine shafts. I stayed up the previous night studying and not being the most dexterous in the first place, I accidentally knocked a support lose after being knocked off balance by one of the twins he brought with us. Dandur and Haddock made me promise to heal him, but I couldn’t. I knew there was a way to do it, but I wasn’t strong enough or smart enough to do it. Torbal wasn’t angry at me nor did he show much sign of pain, but he did make me promise to take care of his two little boys after his death. I accepted them into my already crowded hovel and they became an adopted part of the family. Because I was the closest Torbal had to family, the little bit of riches he had was passed to me and helped to propel me out of Helmden. After a bitter goodbye a few months later, I left Holgrid in charge of the family and property and set off for the center of the city to further my studies and to make more money.
