The Moon's Kiss Myth in Dremlia [Old] | World Anvil

The Moon's Kiss

Summary

Long before even the Dragons set foot upon this land there was nothing, nothing but the moon and the sea. The moon, Mora'Isvani, was in love with the sea. From her lofty throne she would spend all her time gazing lovingly below, but she did not dare draw near for fear of the havoc it would cause. The sea, Ulvi'Il, longed for the moon in return, but he too feared what may come should they so much as share a kiss. So for an eternity, before time flowed through the lands, Mora'Isvani and Ulvi'Il would look upon each other for afar, wishing for the day they could meet.   Eventually, the longing of the moon and the sea, grew too powerful for even them to deny any longer. They believed that if they could just share a single kiss, then perhaps they would be sated for at least another eternity. So, Mora'Isvani and Ulvi'Il drew near to one another, the moon lowering herself down to meet the sea as he rose up to meet her. As the water receded the first dry land rose up from the depths, Muro'Qul was his name, and as the moon left the sky the light of her passion formed the first star, who's name was Tyrin'Al.    Alas, the earth and the sun were not the only consequences of this union. Seeing the moon distracted in her love, the darkness bore forth monstrosities to descend upon the world to corrupt and shackle all things. These beasts, the first Dragons, enslaved Muro'Qul and Tyrin'Al, binding them to their wicked will. The Dragons attempted to chain Mora'Isvani and Ulvi'Il, keep them forever separated, but before the two lovers could be pulled apart the moon gave the sea a single kiss. From this kiss arose the Ivelen, the first of the Elves, rising from the waters, born from the love of the moon and the sea.    Seeing the magnificence of the Ivelen, the Dragons caged the moon in the night sky and chained the sea to the depths, so that the two could never again meet, fearing what may come from their union. The jealous serpents captured the Elves and made them their slaves, to serve their every wicked whim. Mora'Isvani looked upon the plight of her children and was saddened, but from her cage she could do nothing to save them, but she could help. In her sorrow, a single silver tear descended upon her cheek, she took this tear and placed it in the hearts of the Ivelen, and with this gift the Elves were given the power of magic.

Variations & Mutation

While the Alfar worship Mora'Isvani as their chief deity, the Sylvan worship Tyrin'Al as their chief deity, this difference in belief changes the specifics of the story. While the overall structure and premise of the story remains the same between the two tribes of Elves, the characters at the center of the myth are different. Instead of the moon and the sea being the first things to exist, the Sylvan tell the tale as the sun and the earth being the first things to exist. Also, the story is known as "The Sun's Kiss" amongst the Sylvan for in their telling, it was the kiss between the sun and the earth that birthed the first Elves, whom arose not from the water but from the trees. Regardless of these differences, the Alfar variation of this myth seems to be the oldest telling, as far as scholarly study has been able to trace.
