Jotunn

Basic Information

Biological Traits

The Jotunn are the largest of the four races of Dremlia, towering over even the most massive Humans. Their size makes them a hardier people than the other races, being able to survive in extreme temperatures that would kill most others. The Jotunn have been observed to be able to go weeks without any food or water and still retain their strength. It is theorized that the Jotunn may be able to sustain themselves from ambient magical energy they absorb from their surroundings.    Second in uniqueness to their size and hardiness is the famed Jotunn immortality. Now this is not to say that the Jotunn can not die for their have been many instances of the giant folk being felled in battle. Jotunn immortality speaks to the fact that the Jotunn seemingly do not age, and none have ever been seen to die of old age. The only insight we have into this phenomenon is a written interview with a Jotunn who went by the name "Free-Tongue". This Jotunn claimed that their people can live for as long as they wish, and once they feel that their time in the physical realm has ended they become one with the forces of nature. None are sure if this is metaphorical or literal but it is true that their have been some Jotunn being found to have lived for well over two thousand years.

Naming Traditions

As far as it is known, Jotunn do not give themselves names, instead through their sensitive connection to magic individual Jotunn can simply sense the identity of other Jotunn. Despite this, those few Jotunn that have made contact with the other races, have found it useful to take on a nickname, either choosing one for themselves or using one given to them by their companions. This leads to the "names" of the Jotunn varying widely, depending upon where their travels take them, with some even collecting long lists of names and titles over their seemingly infinite lives.

Relationship Ideals

One of the few things known about the Jotunn is their solitary lifestyle. It is rare to find two Jotunn in a single place, and never has an instance of any kind of marriage or partnership been observed amongst them. Despite this there have been a few instances of Jotunn becoming enamored with those of the other races and even engaging in marriage or other forms of partnership. This leads most scholars to believe that these kinds of relationships do exist between the Jotunn despite never being witnessed.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

In an unusual phenomenon, the Jotunn seem to be able to quickly master all known languages, from Dwarvish to Elvish, all languages are easily understandable to the Jotunn. Along with their extreme capability for language, the Jotunn seem to have their own extremly complex language that none have been able to decipher. This unknonw Jotunn language seems to consist of a mix of nonverbal communication along with their subtle extrasensory abilities and is only used in the most formal instances. It is unknown whether this language is even possible for those not of the Jotunn race to even utilize. In less formal instances the Jotunn also speak Jotunar, a much less complex language, though still more complex than any other language.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Little to nothing is truly known about Jotunn culture save for their extreme secrecy regarding anything surrounding their culture or people. Most Jotunn refuse to speak about their culture and those that have given insight into some of their people's ways have revealed little. The unwillingness of the Jotunn to speak about their people is of great interest to the scholars of Dremlia, with the few written materials on the race held in high regard. What we know about the Jotunn is that they are a nomadic people, tending to keep their travels within their native lands; the Jordholm Mountains and the Roaring Wastes. Despite this, a few Jotunn have been known to travel to even the farthest reaches of Dremlia.
