This book is split up into three main sections. The first is about the drow living underground, who built a huge network of tunnels on the northwest half of the city. Their tunnels tend to be spiderweb-shaped and narrow, and they developed many magical methods to deal with digging. The second section is about the underground dwarves, who built on the southeast half of the city. They had more open tunnels and they made use of structural pillars, and their solutions tended to be more inventor-focused. Throughout the two first sections, it does mention how the two factions underground each were convinced that they were there first, so when the tunnels inevitably met up with each other as each faction expanded, a long and bloody war ensued. So many of the underground tunnels are built with fighting and war in mind. The third section says that no one was sure who exactlyran into the demons first, but both groups quickly created choke points between the upper levels and the lower levels to make them easier to defend, and they focused less on defenses against the other sides. It also discusses how many lower-level tunnels started out small, but were smashed larger by some unspeakably large and evil force.
