Poison Arrow Latex

Poison arrow latex comes from a tropical tree called the poison arrow tree. The latex from these trees has seen extensive use by hunters and in warfare as a poison to tip arrows, hence the name. The fruit from the poison arrow tree is edible.
Poison arrow bark has a high concentration of tannins, making it useful for dyeing garments and creating paints. Fibres can also be taken from the bark to create coarse cloths. Those of courting age occasionally use the bark to create love charms to catch the eyes of potential suitors. The leaf litter makes for a great material in mulch, particularly for settlements that intentionally cultivate poison arrow trees for shade.
Unfortunately, the uses of the poison arrow tree are offset by a considerable drawback: it is one of most poisonous, if not the most poisonous, tree in Dratora. Its latex is so toxic that some fear to approach the tree in case they accidentally make contact with the latex and die as a result. Animals and other plants struggle to remain too close to the trees, giving it another purpose as a ward against wilderness beasts, and those who manufacture the bark of an poison arrow tree must be extremely careful not to intoxicate themselves.

Geology & Geography

The poison arrow tree is native to the tropics, growing especially on tropical islands. It can also be found growing in savannahs, coastal plateaus, and many varieties of wet forests. It tends to only grow at low elevations.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Common folk use poison arrow bark to make love charms, and use the leaves to start off compost heaps. The latex is used for hunting and combat if and when they are called to fight, though most folk avoid the tree, particularly the latex, due to its incredibly harmful properties.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Poison arrow trees grow quickly and has a dense canopy, leading tropical settlements to cultivate them for shade. Those settlements that do make use of the poison arrow tree have a less bleak opinion of the tree, and see it as a means of overcoming ailments and weakness, despite the tree's potent poison.

Manufacturing & Products

The bark from the poison arrow tree is used to create cloths, dyes, and paints; any remaining pieces of the bark are offered to the younger residents to fashion into love charms.

Hazards

The poison arrow tree is the most poisonous tree in Dratora, and tampering with it unprotected can often mean certain death.

Distribution

Law & Regulation

With the exception of the hunting party of the settlement's leader, or during times of war, harvesting poison arrow latex is outlawed. However, the bark of the poison arrow tree is not restricted from harvest or use, making the law forbidding latex harvesting difficult to enforce consistently.
