Onyx

Onyx is a black and white banded stone, some rarer versions have red stripes or bands rahter than black. The gem is usually used in carving and engravings where the multicolored bands are used to give greater depth. The red patterned onyx was often used as amulets of bravery, Midwives would place them between the breasts of birthing mothers to help them fight through the pregnancy.
