These heavy cloth robes contained metal plates between the layers of cloth with the rivet heads on the outside forming a pattern on the cotton cloth. These cloth outer layer ranged from yellow for low ranking soldiers, to red for officers, to various gold thread and leaf designs for generals. Many brigands or peasant soldiers wore undyed or browns and greys.
