Sun Lamps
One of the most famous inventions of Leven Zhe, sun lamps look like hexagonal or octagonal paper lanterns with folding ‘petals’ that can attach and unattach at either end. Hung in one direction and opened they absorb sunlight, reducing ambient light to a small degree (60’). Closing the petals allows the light to be stored permanently. Reversing the direction and opening the petals allows the stored sunlight to shine forth (60’). Sunlamps release light for about 2/3 the amount of time that they were open to charge.
The interior of a sun lamp is a complex labyrinth of folded paper. Sun lamps are easily destroyed by cutting or by burning.
