The Wild Dragons of the Barrier Islands

In 1608, a ship on it's way to the Spanish colonies wrecked on the barrier islands off the coast of Virginia. The ship, carrying a number of dragon eggs and some supplies from Spain for the colonies. The eggs in the hold were able to survive due to their secure placement in the hold and they floated out of the wreckage, washing up on shore. A single sailor survived the wreck and washed ashore with the eggs. He brought the eggs onto dry land and away from the surf. Within a few weeks, the first of the eggs hatched, a Castilian Dorado, who helped to care for the sailor who was in the late stages of an illness related to his injuries. The man died of his injuries shortly following the second hatching. The second egg, a Flecha del Fuego, helped the Dorado to burn the man's body in a dragonfire pyre on the sands of the island. The two dragons helped the others to hatch, quickly swelling their number to 7 dragons living on the remote barrier island without humans. They subsisted largely on fish and crustaceans from the ocean and some of the wild horses also inhabiting the island.    In 1673, they first encountered additional humans who were exploring the islands in a small ship on behalf of the Virginia Colonial Government. Although the dragons were cordial with the exploring humans, quickly learning English to communicate, they flat out refused to be put into harness or subject themselves to the will of the English explorers or their government. The dragons gave the explorers directions back to the mainland and requested to be left alone. In his report to the Governor of Virginia, the exploration leader stressed the cordial nature the dragons had exhibited as well as their emphasis on being left alone in the future. With no natural resources on the island, the Governor ordered that the dragons be given their island and the government would merely observe from a distance.    The dragons are still cohabitating with the wild horses of the island.
