Demetrius Jones Character in Draconia | World Anvil

Demetrius Jones

Demetrius Jones (a.k.a. L-trius)

They expect us to just sit back, day after day while they treat us like shit. We're the ones who were affected by the attacks, but we're the ones who have to pay for reconstruction? One day there's going to be a revolution. And I'm going to be on the side of whoever's killing dragons.
— Demetrius Jones
The fiery and independent soul of Draconia Defense Force Team 12, Demetrius Jones is a headstrong individual with a strong sense of morality and an even stronger sense of justice. While he is young, even by human standards, he and his best friend Archades were forced to mature quickly as a result of the Gem and Ferrous dragon attacks ten years prior. He hails from Briggs and grew up with Archades in an orphanage in the capital city. After years of training and preparing for a harsh adulthood, he was ultimately placed into the draft for the Defense Force after his attitude towards dragon-like races got him discharged from standard military service. Now, with his new band of friends, he seeks out the dragons that have caused his life to be filled with strife and hardship.

Childhood

Any records of Demetrius' childhood were destroyed in the attack ten years ago. The earliest records after the attack are that he lived at the Tiamat's Home for Orphans institution. While there he began to form his radical opinions of the dragon races by the time he became a teenager. Some of the factors that contributed to this way of thinking were the ways that he and other orphans were treated while in the home. The caretakers, all of whom were either dragonborn or kobolds, did nothing to actually take care of the home. Instead, all of the orphans were left to do it, being punished if they ever missed an assignment or task. When they came of age to legally work in the city, any money they were given was deposited to the caretakers bank accounts instead of going to the orphan's pockets. The only saving grace to living was the access to workout equipment and a library filled with training manuals that taught all forms of combat.   As the years trudged on Demetrius began to temper himself, albeit only slightly. His angry and violent outbursts directed towards the caretakers began to lessen into heated confrontations. He also took on a much bigger role of being a big brother to the younger orphans. During the freetime he had in between studying, cleaning and working, he would take the children into the city to explore. Sometimes he would even take them to the theater for a play or two (if he could smuggle away enough money from his employers as "advance pay"). Then, at age 16, he declared his intent to join the Briggs army when he turned 18. It was both his ticket out of the hell-hole he'd been living in for the past six years, but also a chance to see the rest of Draconia, maybe find a way to settle in Virdio. Unfortunately, his declaration also brought him more trouble from both his caretakers and members of the military.

Military Service

For the two years that followed Demetrius' intent to enlist, a growing number of individuals tried to find ways to disrupt that pledge. The caretakers at the orphanage became much more ruthless in their endeavors to disrupt any semblance of a routine he had. They hid his training manuals in remote locations of the home, doubled his chores to keep him too busy and even began to rope Archades into it as well. Influential members of the local garrison also made trouble for Demetrius. Whenever he managed to produce some personal time, they would harass him by following him around and taunting him with insults, slights and even slurs. The constant badgering led to some back-alley fist fights between Demetrius and his soon-to-be "comrades". It was a very obvious effort to try and dissuade the young man from following through with his commitment. His big mouth had gotten him in trouble in plenty of ways, but this was definitely the worst. It wasn't unexpected, though, he knew that his constant bad-mouthing of the status quo would incur some form of retribution at some point.   In a testament to his patience and will, Demetrius did follow through with his pledge. As soon as his eighteenth birthday passed, he took his belongings, all of the training manuals he had studied, and left the orphanage. After his draft forums were signed, he was shipped off to Chastokol Gibel, Briggs' main training facility. His opinions on his superiors did not change, neither did his tendency to let them know exactly how he felt about them. He quickly gained a reputation for being unhinged and a glutton for punishment. Even the other recruits who sympathized with the way he felt soon found themselves a bit off put by how fervent Demetrius was in his dogma. It didn't matter that he had his reasons for it, all that mattered was that his big mouth was getting them into trouble. He found himself hazed out of any groups that would accept him, and he quickly became a loner within his assigned units.   Despite his outcast status, Demetrius did find a niche within the army. His studies had paid off in that he found a very strong set of edicts that belong to a divine school of magic. After mastering the edicts, he burned them to prevent them from being discovered by his superiors and other colleagues. To this day, he is the only cleric of the god he worships. Some of the generals have attempted to discover in particular which deity he draws his power from, though no one has ever come close. While it would normally be a crime for this to be the case, his skill in combining supportive magic with deadly combat magic earned him a degree of leniency from Overlord Zilvaroth. Demetrius would, of course, abuse this leniency, knowing that because of his status a majority of the ones who would obstruct him could no longer do so. But even Zilvaroth had his limits. The boiling point was reached when after a string of successful assignments, Demetrius demanded that his friend Archades be enlisted, despite the health issues that were now affecting him. Despite the generals' best efforts at remaining civil and tactful with him, Demetrius wouldn't have it any other way.

Defense Force

Demetrius' attitude, behavior and conduct had finally reached the end of the road. He was struck with disobeying orders of a superior, assault and battery, as well as detrimental conduct charges that led to a dishonorable discharge from the Briggs military. His salary was forfeit, his merits stripped, as was his license to practice magic within Briggs' borders. Without much to his name, the only thing Demetrius could do was establish a small little hut in Zapusk. He made a living hunting yetis and providing doctor services for those who couldn't afford to pay the town doctor. The population in Zapusk was much more of a family than any of the population in the capital, and he felt safe using magic, despite the loss of his legal capability to do so.   Eventually, he received a letter from Archades. There was to be a meeting at the holy ground, Quirin Umer, to discuss the dragon attacks from years ago. Supposedly, there would also be some sort of military training or draft that would take place depending on the outcome of the council. With nothing left to lose, the two friends paid Zilvaroth a visit in order to procure a pair of invitations to the island council. The two were successful, and after the attack on the island, were given draft letters to attend the training camps outside of Virdio in the coming weeks. And with that, the two became entwined with a group of dipshits...
