Xia Freefeather
(a.k.a. Dark Phoenix)
Few have gone through as many highs and lows in the life as Xia Freefeather. Born into bondage as a slave of Cerelea the Covetous, she was raised to be a witch and assassin. Though her initial studies showed promise, she was swept up in her people's rebellion and exodus as a young child. Before she knew what was happening so was spirited onto a ship and headed out to sea.
She can still remember the joy and excitement of her kinsmen as the Miridian coast disappeared over the horizon. But she also remembers the fear days later when longships appeared on the opposing horizon. The darkborn refugees were tired, hungry, and under equipped to fight a naval battle, and their ship was captured with relative ease.
Free from one set of chains for mere days, Xia suddenly found herself in a new set of manacles, but she was determined to be a slave no longer. At the first opportunity she stole a guard's dagger and knifed him in the thigh. She swiped his keys, freed herself, and was about to dive headfirst into the frigid surf when the mountainous thal captain lifted her clean off the deck and threw her, thrashing, over his shoulder. The big man had laughed boisterously as her escape attempt, but he did not return her belowdecks to the long chains of her fellow darkborn. Instead he insisted there was something special in store for girls like her. Even at her young age, Xia knew to be fearful of a strange man making such an ominous statement.
But when they landed in Norinia her fears and expectations were greatly subverted. Instead of keeping her or harming her the captain turned her over women clad in armor. They named themselves Valkyries and took her off to train as their sister. In Valkyrine Xia's training served her excellently, quickly moving her ahead of her trainee peers. And for one who spent her whole life as a slave, nothing was quite as sweet as the freedom of flight. From her first pegasus ride Xia knew she had found a new home, and chose the surname "Freefeather" as a celebration of this fact. Her sisters sometimes call her "Dark Phoenix" for her heritage and the way she has seemingly risen from the ashes of her own fate.
