Vail Mariner

Lord of Baywatch (a.k.a. The Voyager)

Perhaps it is because of his mixed heritage that Vail can never seem satisfied to call any one place home. Being of mixed elven descent with a half elf father and wood elf mother, he came into this world a Leviathan-touched waterborn. As with many of his kind he took naturally to sailing, leaving his home of Wright Harbor at a young age to sail the Norinian Sea. Through his courage, skill, and insight, he quickly rose to the position of captaining his own ship.   Over time his legend only grew: sailing all across the Imperium, from the Frostwood to the Somerset Hills, studying with the Deep Seers at Deepview Watch, and battling raiders from Norinia. Vail was on the first ship set to colonize the island now known as Baywatch, and has since been installed as its ruler. He eventually owned a fleet of trade vessels which worked a network from the Mysty Coast all the way to Southscape and Rustport, making him one of the more wealthy people in the imperium.   But still Vail's most daring endeavor was the rescue of the high elves. Upon hearing of the siege of Sunsong he gathered up what ships he could could quickly muster and personally led them around the coast of Miridia, passed the Free Isles, and through the Strait of Sorrows to liberate the elves still holding out in Syridia. The voyage itself cost him a good number of sailors and ships, and more were sunk or captured loading refugees as the city burned, but at least according to the story it was Vail's own ship that spirited the princess Vaelyria away to safety. The endeavor had cost him dearly in means and men, but as soon as they made it to Southscape to drop off the refugees and resupply, he set out south again for another run. But this second campaign was even less successful, with the majority of his ships being lost and very few escapees to show for it. Not having enough of a force to reasonably try a third time, Vail took his remaining sailors and limped home to Baywatch. Having expended most of his power, influence, and personal wealth, he is reported to have said of the affair after the fact, "I only regret I couldn't save more of them."
